Nitto's New NT421Q Tires

I was chosen by Nitto to review their new line of tires for SUVs & crossovers - the Nitto NT421Q.

I have installed them on my 4th Gen T4R and so far I am quite impressed with the ride quality and handling. Initially, I did not have much hopes of liking them, because I have always used all-terrain tires on my truck and although I had been considering a touring tire (since nowadays we use our T4R for family trips and the rest of the time my wife uses it as her mall-terrain vehicle), I feared I would not adjust to the difference in firmness. However, the NT421Q has definitely left nothing wanting. It handles great, feels solidly firm and is very quiet. Even when getting them installed at the tire shop, the techs offered me compliments and commented on the high quality of tires I was installing. Apparently, Nitto has been gathering a reputation and the shop told me they are among the higher-end tires they offer.

The first welcome change is how quiet these tires are on the highway. Gone is the hypnotizing, droning hum of the all-terrains that have always kept us from cruising with the windows down!

Next, these tires command a firm grip on the road that makes the truck much easier to handle on winding roads and quick turns. Just to know that I wasn't convincing myself falsely, I decided not to tell my wife the truck had new tires (she asked if I had done something to it because it looked different, but she didn't have a clue). First time she drove it, she commented on how much better it was handling turns, and I finally told her it had new tires. She was quite impressed. Next I rolled the windows down and she immediately noticed how quiet they were. She has been driving it daily for a couple of weeks and is very happy with the change.

The company describes the tires as follows: "The 421Q is Nitto’s premier all-season tire built specifically for your crossovers (CUV) and SUVs. From style to function, the 421Q has been created with the foremost purpose of getting you safely to your destination throughout the seasons. The unique and stylish asymmetric tread design provides quiet and comfortable ride while delivering all-season traction. Backed by a class-leading mileage warranty (75,000-mile for H, V speed rated sizes, and 60,000-mile for W speed rated sizes), you can be confident in replacing your original factory equipped tire with the 421Q."

Based on their technical description of this line, Nitto attributes enhanced handling on the built-in sipes that are more common in winter tires, and the inclusion of this technology improves handling in all weather conditions, along with an asymmetric tread pattern.

Another performance enhancer they describe is the inclusion of rubber inserts in the shoulders of the tires that serve to add sidewall strength, while at the same time improving smoothness. Also improving smoothness and quietness is the serration technology embedded in the grooves, which aid in breaking up repetitive and reverberating noise.

A final highlight of this line is built-in wear indicators that unlike the traditional wear bars, the tread has microperforations from top to bottom that allow for easy assessment of progressive wear, as well as facilitating the identification of unusual wear patterns.

Here's a couple more close-ups of the NT421Q's on my T4R:

Overall, I feel that the NT421Q lives up to its claims. I have only been using them for about 100 miles. However, I am liking them quite a bit. The only issue is that these were not available in stock size for my 4th gen T4R (265/65/17) but I went with a 245/65/17, which the size difference is very small, they are rated 111H, have a UTQG rating of 640AA, a 75,000 warranty and personally, I like the way they fit my truck.

If any of you are ready for new rubber, I'd highly recommend you give these a try.

they look good but i'm curious to know how they handle on wet roads (i do understand that its summertime in san diego), rough/bumpy roads, etc. kinda hard to make a determination on a set of wheels in 100 miles. i put a set of pirelli's on my wifes camry and absolutely loved them until i finally got to drive it in the rain and found out they were horrible in wet weather.

Your guess is correct - I haven't had the chance to try them out in wet conditions yet. I just put them on & we're nearing the middle of summer here.

If past experience is any indicator though, I'll tell you this much: after being a Hankook die hard fan for many years, I put a set of Nitto Motivos on my sport-tuned Maxima last year and I was extremely impressed in both wet and dry conditions. They have a decided advantage over the Hankook Venus (V4ES). These, the NT421Q's have an even higher rating for wet conditions than the Motivos, so I can't wait to try them in the rain. I'll be updating this thread every 5-10K miles, so I'll keep you posted when we get some rain down here.

Bumpy & windy roads, they feel nice and firm. I thought they would feel softer than the all terrains & was a little gun shy instinctively but once I made the conscious effort to put then to the test, they do feel quite sporty. I don't miss my all - terrains one bit so far. I was previously riding on Hankook Dynapros.

i'll be looking for your updates. i'm planning on buying new tires for my wifes camry and sequoia before winter and being here in washington state, better tire performance in wet conditions is gonna be a huge factor.

***ending this review***

Unfortunately, I am ending my review of the Nitto NT 421Q's. I was contacted by Nitto's representative and asked to remove the tires from my T4R. Nitto was concerned about the difference from the stock tire size and made their request out of safety concerns, which is perfectly understandable.

In all, I clocked about 1,500 miles on the NT421Q's and in that short time, I really enjoyed them. I was looking forward to the wet season on them but I didn't get enough time. I did get a day-and-a-half of light rain around town and although it wasn't much to get to really test them, they did feel quite confident on the wet pavement - this is taking into account that although they did not get much water, they had to deal with the oil slicks that are common on the roads down here with the first rains. Based on those factors, my limited time with them was enough to conclude they perform well in wet conditions, but again, I got very limited time with them.

Nitto was kind enough to exchange them for a set of Terra Grapplers. Rolling on all-terrains again (the Grapplers), I now appreciate some of the significant trade-offs between the two tires' natures. In retrospect, the NT421Q's buckled a little more on the turns compared to the Grapplers, but the ease of turning was much more fluid. Like I mentioned before, they are very quiet on the road, and they handle buttery-smooth. The Grapplers however, offer less comfort and more road noise, but the squarer/knobbier design make the truck feel like it steers itself and after a turn, it feels like the wheel springs back to straight (at the price of turning agility, albeit). My wife is also a bit disappointed in the change she commented is that "the truck feels heavy again." I didn't notice that because for one, I have a lead foot, and because I tend to focus on the feel of the handling than on the drag factor. I can see her point though, just from my experience of carrying the Grapplers vs. the NT421Q's - big weight difference. I think a lot of it also has to do with the difference in the ease of turning. The Grapplers make me feel like I can drive through anything, but the NT421Q's definitely prove they are made for the asphalt.

Comparing the NT421Q to the Grapplers (or the Hankook Dynapros I was previously using) is kind of like comparing apples to oranges, because they are designed very, very differently. For touring, I would take the NT421Q's any day. If they make them in stock size later on, I will definitely get a set for regular use, and use a set of all-terrains for the winter months.

Here's the sizes that are currently available: NT421Q

I hope this review helped some of you and if they make them for your SUV or crossover that you use mainly for highway, I would definitely encourage you to try them out.
