no 2L

Hey guys, my 05 4runner won't shift into 2L when the truck is on. I was able to force it into 2L with it not running, but is this a sign that there is something major wrong with the tranny?

Probably a bad actuator.....

There's also this thing called a search bar on the top of the page, this has been covered countless times. Next time try that before you start a new thread.

I searched countless times in google for '2l not working' '2l wont shift' 'bad 2l 4runner' I know how google works, thanks for the tip tho.

Obviously you don't how this site works then.....I wasnt describing google. I was talking about this forums search function.

Your truck doesn't have "2 low" either. Just trying to help you.

I know how forums work, I run fancytuning.com, but to me you came off as an ass by assuming I didn't search first.

Google has every forum in the world that could potentially have a topic for an automatic not shifting into 2L..tried every keyword variation possible and didn't find a single one...this site was my last option..

So now you're telling me they just put 2L on the shifter to look pretty?

Ok now you're sounding like an ass. I'm an ase certified auto technician and was ready to offer my help.

Does the transmission grind or act-up otherwise? Have you tried it rolling, stopped? You said you could force it with the engine off, does it feel as if something in the tranny is binding or more in the shifter mechanism inside? My guess right now would be that something in the shifter mechanism inside has come loose or broke.
 
4 , 3,2, L, utilize engine braking, for shifting into L u need to be going under 26 mph. the others can be done at about 54-58, if in 4LO, it has to be 9mph before shifting to L. so its most likely a safe guard for the trans. hope this helps.

You had me confused too. When most speak of L (low) in that manner they are usually referring to the transfer case not the transmission. Had you said 2nd gear or low gear I bet the search would have turned up more information about your problem.

no grinds, for 90k miles it feels as smooth as a car with 20k..

I live in florida, so the use of engine braking is rarely necessary..

I'm thinking it could just be what the other guy said, needing to be at a certain speed before it will shift into that gear? I'll try that out..

Here's a pic (see the 2L, thats the only one it wont shift into)

Its not a straight back pull on the shifter to get it into those gears. You have to move it back and right (towards the pax seat). I had trouble initially until I figured out the path the shifter has to take.
 
take the cover off the shift lock (its a the very front of your gear shift its a 1cm x 1cm square), stick any key in there and then try shifting into 2 and then LO. you have to jog it over a small amount to the right to go into 2 then further to the right to L
