No 4wd and high idle

So, I went driving and was checking my 4wd and it won't engage. No light. I can hear a relay click from what sounds like the passenger footwell when I take it out of 2hi. I put it in 4lo and the runner lurches and squeaks tires. Same with 4hi. No light and it's not in 4wd. When I put it back in 2hi the runner clunks loudly and lurches again.
I recently was messing with the passenger side cv. I've read a bunch of threads and one hinted to passenger side cv not being properly installed could be the culprit but it didn't go into detail.

Also, I've learned that the vsv controls the 4wd engagement. How do I test the vsv? I was thinking my constant high idle could be caused by a vacuum leak/busted vsv...plus it buzzes annoyingly when the runner is off.

Help. Thanks. You guys are bad ass.

....and it never fails.

As soon as I ask a question or search for something, I answer my own question. There's been thousands of times I'll be looking for something. Get frustrated. Text the ol lady. "Have you seen my..." And then find it seconds after I hit send.

After I posted I went in the garage to check the vacuum lines one more time. I followed the line attached to the check valve and there's a tee right where it connects to the manifold. Part of the tee was unattached. I couldn't see it, only feel. I reconnected it.

4wd now engages, idle is better. 1100 vs 1600 but I still get big clunks when shifting to/from 4wd.

So, problem almost solved.... Any more advice.

J-shift, right?

You get a clunk going from 4Hi to 2Hi? That has to be bad, but I'm not even sure where to start. Moving or stopped?

Or from 4Lo to 2Hi? Stopped or moving? (Trick question, you should not be moving to do this.)

I'm thinking your high idle could be part of the problem here.

Your idling at 1100. Is still high. Should be around 7-800 when normal temperature.

Spec is 700 ± 50 rpm. As I said, high idle definitely could contribute to a clunk with an auto trans, I would think. (I'm a MT guy.)
