No Auto Headlight option

Many new vehicles comes with Auto Headlights. Some have a good way of creating a switch for it and some do it in a bad way.
My 2005 Limited and 2016 Limited, both come with this feature. On 4th Gen Toyota did a great job to put "Auto" function at last position, so if you don't want to use it, this feature can easily be avoided. Unfortunately, on 5th Gen Toyota engineers made a big mistake re-positioning the function to the first position, this is very annoying and uncomfortable.
Meanwhile, Trail/TRD do not come with this feature and therefore they Turn Signal / Headlight Stalk does not have this "Auto" feature.

Did anyone tried to switch Limited stalk with Trail/TRD stalk? Would it work? I suppose it would, but dealership is asking over $200 for the part and because its an electrical component it can not be returned, so it could of be very expensive try it if this would not work.

I just leave mine in auto and never gave it another thought until I read this post. It would probably annoy me to have it the other way.

It's another post discussion, but I prefer to control the vehicle myself rather then give machine control over.
 
I don't understand... you want to get rid of the auto option? It's not like you have to use it, seems like a lot of work just to save a little more turn on the knob.

Yes, I want to remove it.
I have HID installed, so first of all every time I need to turn just Parking Light, I have to go through the Auto function which resulting short flickering of HID bulbs significantly shorter bulb and ballast life (HID doesn't like short time switching on/off). Plus having 2 4Runners, 2005 and 2016, I got used to have 2 click for Low Beam, but in 5th Gen it only parking with drls, and if account rotation degrees of each position, it's uncomfortable to turn 3 click at single movement.
 
Swap switches with someone that has an SR5 and see if it works. I don't see why it wouldn't. I'd be happy to swap with you, wish you weren't so far away.

I understand your 'reasoning' given the HID's - but how often are you running just your 'parking lights'? In 8 years of ownership I think I may have used them once. I either run DRL or my headlights - no reason for 'parking lights'. Do you leave your 4R by the side of the road running often?

Several times a week at least or sometimes even more often...
 
Do a search, there is a thread discussing this at GREAT length. I can’t remember if someone bought the replacement stalk to see if it worked but it’s an extensive thread including wiring diagrams.

Maybe try disconnecting the light sensor in the center of the dash, that way when the switch is in "Auto" it won't realize that it is dark outside and the lights won't click on.

Adding the AUTO Headlight function

I would like to ADD the Auto function to my 2011 4-Runner that currently does not have it. I have a 12v relay ready to go but cannot figure out which wire to use that will shut them all off when the car is not running. Any thoughts?

Does anyone know where I can find the pin outs for the headlight switch that is located on the left side of the stalk? 2011 Toyota 4-runner specifically.
