No Headlight Chime?

I find it strange that my T4R doesn't "ding" at me when I leave the headlights on. Does it have an auto-off feature, so it doesn't matter? Or will I come out to a dead runner one day?

I've never had a car that didn't, even if it had an auto-off feature or auto headlights like on my Jeep. I do not have Auto headlamps on the 4R.

My 07 has the auto-off feature so it's not needed. I assume that you 04 probably has it, too, since my 99 4runner and 04 Tacoma also had this feature.

The only difference I can see is that on my 99 and my Taco, the auto-off was instant: You leave the lights on with the key out of the ignition, and as soon as you open the driver's door, the lights go off and stay off.

On my 07, the lights will stay on when I open the driver's door, but they are on a timer and will go off in 30 or 60 seconds, even after I push the "lock" button on the remote. However, if I push the lock button twice, they will go off immediately.

Try this with your 04, I think you'll find the lights go off by themselves.

I believe the off delay is a designed feature, to provide illumination while you are walking back to house/walkway from vehicle. But, you can overide this feature, as you discovered, by hitting lock button twice.

We have an auto-off feature, so I guess Toyota opted not to add the chime (thank god).

+1, I really hated that chime on my other cars. It did make me very conscious of my lights tho.

On the 07MY all the lights on the truck are designed with the same feature. My wife left the overhead light on overnight and i didnt know until i started the car the next morning.

Did some experimenting, and all of this stuff is spot on. Double tap on the lock button shuts it all off, as does a 30 second wait.

Thanks all, trying to learn all I can about this beast.
