I've watched that several times, I cannot see the gun or his hands. I can see him lift up on his jacket in the frame before he gets shot...which would indicate that he got shot as he was going to pull the gun out of his pants. This is speculation, but he likely was going to pull it out to show the police it wasn't real, but how exactly do they know that? They don't, thats how. They see him lift his jacket, where they know he has been pulling the gun from, and thats all they know.
Again, very unfortunate incident, but not the fault of the police. The kids decisions lead to this result, and his decisions were determined by his upbringing. THATS the moral of the story.

1. Ok, he deserved what he got. He was clearly pointing an object that looked like a gun in public. Make any stupid moves once the police arrive, you're going to get shot.
2. You say "police" and clearly imply ALL police, either prove it or shut up about it because it's not true, not across the board anyways. I don't want to be labeled racist just because of my job any more than a black man wants to be thought of as a lazy welfare-sucking felon just because he's black. In your mind it's totally acceptable to stereotype police but not blacks?

NO - they shouldn't. Police, like Fire Fighters and the US MILITARY put their lives at risk every day protecting their fellow Americans. Police are killed often, including many just in the last few months. Their job is very serious and very dangerous. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOME TRAGEDY SHOOTINGS, it is unavoidable. America tries to limit this but unless the officer acted against protocol they should not be punished.
Does everyone remember Columbine? How the police waited outside and did not go in. That was then. This is now. Now we - Americaaaaaa - want police to actively go in and take out the shooters. We have decided that we want active policing to prevent or minimize the next possible Columbine. This comes with a price and the price is that sometimes police will mistake a fake gun for a real gun. It is part of the deal and it is always a tragedy but again its part of the deal.

I've heard from several sources that the media is incorrectly reporting the "near exact Replica gun" as a toy and not a "Replica Gun"
How can we expect cops to tell the difference between a replica gun and real gun?
Anyone ever see the movie that SNATCH ? There is a scene where they show what a replica gun looks like and surprise - it looks exactly like a regular gun.
I do look at that situation as a HUGE tragedy for the families of the boy involved, for the deceased and for the officers whom I 100% believe did not want to shoot a 12 year old who was holding a fake gun.
I remember when I was a kid and I took my Toys R Us orange & black toy pistol (it looked like a 9mm Beretta) and painted it black. My dad was very upset and make me remove the paint so it was orange again. He told me that cops had shot a kid recently because they confused a fake black toy gun for a real one. This was back in the early 90s - I think I was about 12 so it would have been like 1994-ish. My point is that this isn't a new issue for policing and there hasn't been a "fix-all" solution found even after 20+ (or more) years.

We've even got protests here in San Diego. They shut down the freeway last Wednesday morning and caused thousands of cars to pile-up in traffic. People (of all ethnicities) couldn't get to work on time because of it.

The one guy looks a bit crazy but he was just mad because he felt that the protesters were putting his families livelihood at risk by blocking the freeway and if he didn't get to work (@ Ross) he would be fired. There is actually a kickstarter for the guy and it has raised quite a bit of cash for his family - a kind of thank you for standing on the side of reason.
Ironically most of the protesters here in San Diego are very well off, basically rich kids from local colleges, many of them are white, and they are blocking the freeway making it so everyone else in San Diego, which is a VERY DIVERSE city cannot get to work.
The image of the well off (middle class to rich) white & minority college kids blocking the freeway, preventing the many non-white minorities from getting to work to feed their families is particularly stinging and goes to show the utter failure of the logic behind these protests.
BUT NO, THEY WILL NOT DO THAT. INSTEAD THEY WILL SHOUT ABOUT RACE AND SHUT DOWN THE FREEWAY, THEN CHEER WHATEVER SPEAKER FROM THE DEMOCRATIC ESTABLISHMENT COMES TO TOWN.
We are a very very very diverse city here in San Diego, there is no this side vs that side mentality or side of town. Everyone was collectively pissed at these protesters and it remains a hot topic.

Anyone who is even remotely educated about progressive politics should know that fixing the items I listed would go A LONG way to solving the problems that have decimated the poorer communities in America. But the media and the political power establishment loves to focus on Ethnicity (call it race if you want, but biology teaches there is no such thing) because it makes for great ratings and fundraising while the real economic & class problems are ignored and never solved.
But hey why would these college students want to talk about money and class when they can instead shout about racism in the middle of a work day (since they don't work) before eventually going back to the the expensive campus life which usually paid for by pretty well off parents. These kids are like the kind of limousine liberals people criticized in the 90s except this time they are usually driving nice cars paid for by their parents.
All the while blaming all of the problems afflicting poor communities on "America's racism" and completely ignoring the legal and political structures that were put in place (by both parties) and even expanded by the Democrats and other liberal leaders.
Note: There is NO firm support from the mainstream Democrats or the African American Leadership to end the war on drugs or in general do the reforms I listed. It is a sad fact but its the truth.
I went to UC Santa Cruz and spent over 2 years interacting with exactly the kind of kids who would be out there on the freeway protesting. There are actually a lot of really cool centrist people at these schools but sadly there are also a lot of the "shut down the freeway" types as well.

I don't know why anybody would want to be an officer in today's world, they are underpayed, overworked, and disrespected by many, but I sometimes think people forget they are human too, and they deserve so much more from our citizens then what they are receiving.

I spent the last 5 years as a nurse in the Denver County jail, the media is all over the falsified stories of deputies beating up inmates, but never once did the media investigate when the inmates would attack/ hospitalize deputies.

Now that you've mentioned it again, I'll mention that it seems disingenuous for you to point it out without being specific.
If we are meant to take it into account in assessing your statements, then a clear indication of minority status would seem to be in order.
If it doesn't matter, then why mention it at all?

Many cops would do the job for free so long as they get to carry around that gun.
Are there good cops? Obviously. Shame they don't come forward when it's time to incriminate the bad ones though, brotherhood or whatever bro.

I don't need to go toe to toe with anecdotes to prove something that surely is true, it's to what extent we (hopefully) only disagree.
For every disturbed rejected cop out there, there are just as many who were accepted. Let's try not to be naive in the face of police killing unarmed civilians including minors.
