1. I can’t wait to hear how the 12 year old in Cleveland was a thug who deserved what he got.
2. Somebody wake me up when we start discussing the underlying problem of how police interact with people of color radically differently than they do white people.
Barkley expressed his frustration with blacks being accused of “acting white” when they study in school and with how blacks are portrayed by the media. “We can be doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, fire- and policemen,” he said, and then turned to Ferguson protests.
“Them jackasses who are looting,” Barkley said in an interview on Philadelphia’s 97.5 The Fanatic last week. “Those aren’t real black people, those are scumbags. The real black people, they’re not out there looting. I just watched a on CNN where a bunch of folks, really amazing folks wouldn’t let them burn down an establishment. it was a great story. I was in Philly this summer when I saw four black kids who left money in a store when there was nobody in the store. … We only put the negative black people on television. We don’t put the good, hard-working black people. …
“There’s a perception among some black people that if you’re not a thug or hood rat or if you don’t war your pants around by your ass, you’re not black enough. They’re always holding us back, plain and simple.”
“[W]e have to be really careful with the cops, because if it wasn't for the cops we would be living in the wild, wild West in our neighborhoods,” he said. “We can’t pick out certain incidentals that don’t go our way and act like the cops are all bad…. Do you know how bad some of these neighborhoods would be if it wasn't for the cops?”
At a minimum I would think those two officers who responded to that call and shot the 12 year old should turn in their badges, lose any and all pension/benefits, and be removed from the police force.
He was clearly pointing an object that looked like a gun in public. Make any stupid moves once the police arrive, you're going to get shot.
IMO these kids should be working fix the following:
* END THE WAR ON DRUGS which is utterly responsible for the DECIMATION of many communities of color throughout the US (and the war on drugs is supported by the very political leaders who are organizing the protests in Ferguson)
* END HS TEACHER TENURE which is responsible for much of the abysmal schooling that poor communities suffer under, especially here in CA where it only takes 18 months to gain a life-long employment contract. The bad 5-10% of the each county are shuffled into the poorest districts over time, essentially placing all the lemons in one bad basket of a crappy school or schools. Vergara v. California Case Summary | Students Matter
* END CA & OTHER STATES THREE STRIKES LAWs which should go without saying has destroyed countless families as millions are locked up for life over non-violent crimes
* END THE (now) 20 to 1 FEDERAL SENTENCING DISPARITY between crack and powder cocaine. If 100 to 1 was racist then so is 20 to 1.
* END ALL MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCING LAWS and restore the power of sentencing discretion to judges
* CREATE A DAMN JOBS PROGRAM - push the democrats & Obama to create a real jobs program for Americas out of work (still waiting for that one and its been 6 years)
* CREATE A NATIONAL FREE COLLEGE PROGRAM for qualified individuals in specific major (eg STEM). This is basically a push for free college like Germany has so students, particularly lower to middle income students, don't have to go into 50K to 100K in debt to get a college education
No officer or police is obligated to let himself be tackled to the ground and beaten by an assailant whether they be armed with a knife or just their fists.
Wow!
God bless him.
He was about to go investigate a killing of a little girl, I'm sure him and many others were heading home to a short glass and tall bottle tonight.
I don't know why anybody would want to be an officer in today's world, they are underpayed, overworked, and disrespected by many, but I sometimes think people forget they are human too, and they deserve so much more from our citizens then what they are receiving.
again, as a minority, i believe...
NO - they shouldn't. Police, like Fire Fighters and the US MILITARY put their lives at risk every day protecting their fellow Americans. Police are killed often, including many just in the last few months.
Now that you've mentioned it again, I'll mention that it seems disingenuous for you to point it out without being specific.
If we are meant to take it into account in assessing your statements, then a clear indication of minority status would seem to be in order.
If it doesn't matter, then why mention it at all?
1. Ok, he deserved what he got. He was clearly pointing an object that looked like a gun in public. Make any stupid moves once the police arrive, you're going to get shot.
2. You say "police" and clearly imply ALL police, either prove it or shut up about it because it's not true, not across the board anyways. I don't want to be labeled racist just because of my job any more than a black man wants to be thought of as a lazy welfare-sucking felon just because he's black. In your mind it's totally acceptable to stereotype police but not blacks?
Many cops would do the job for free so long as they get to carry around that gun.
Really? And you know this how? I am interested in your source of information OR your personal experience as a cop and being around them.
