No reverse and overheating

Let the fun begin. Driving to work today I started overheating, turned on the heat and things went back to normal. Got to work, tried backing into a spot, and no reverse. No codes came up, and fluid levels look good. Last year I have the pink milkshake, and wonder if this sitting for 6 months caused some issues. What do you guys think?

I should add that it started overheating in traffic with the air on. I turned the air off, and the heat on full blast. That helped the issue of overheating instantly, and after getting out of traffic back to highway speeds the temp was normal.

Maybe something in trans not letting fluid to flow and cool. Is your radiator still ran through your trans cooler? If so maybe its heating up the fluid causing overheat.

No external cooler on it. I'm going to look at things on my lunch.
 
you said you had the pink milkshake last year, maybe the damage from that and the heat and time finally caught up with the tranny

Could be, but I'm thinking something else. Everything else is fine. I might pick up some shift solenoids, and try a reset this afternoon on the transmission.
 
Just want to add contribution where I can.

The only time I couldn't reverse (Or I think it was drive forward) was when my ATF was too low after a drain and fill.

Check the dipstick.
 
Gear shift display wrong? I know mine the stick can be in D but the display on the dash says 2 and the transmission will only shift to 2. I bump the stick forward a touch and it is still in D but the display on the dash will show D as well.

Nope, that wasn't the issue.
 
I thought all was good until my way home. Fluid levels are good.

I got home, tried backing in the driveway, and no reverse. So I thought at least. I could give it a lot of gas, and that would get it to move. I didn't feel like it should, there was a lot of resistance in reverse. Also, when going from drive to neutral, neutral never fully engaged. I could give it some gas in neutral, and still go forward. I'm now thinking a new transmission is in order.

Now I'm looking for a new transmission.
 
How old is the radiator?
May be it's clogged. Remove some coolant in the top tank and inspect the core. It may be clogged. I had the same issue in 2011 and found out 3/4 of the core is clogged!
 
Man, sorry to hear about that.
Reading your drive-ability symptoms reminded me when the trans on my other car failed. A trip to a good trans shop confirmed my suspicions.

It was replaced less than a year ago, and only been driven for about 4 months since then. The coolant is good, and there are no clogs.
 
Hey, don't mean to steal your thread here- but I was reading something in this thread that warrants a question.

My t4r has 180k on it the trans shifts fine, but the fluid is very dirty. The guy I bought it from said he did not know when it was last changed, and I am apprehensive because I do not want to lose the clutch particles that are floating around in it.

I noticed someone say a few comments back that the hot trans fluid (in my case perhaps extra hot) could cause overheating because the trans cooler is in the radiator.

I'm overheating after about 40 minutes of driving, particularly under load (mountains) or in traffic. I've changed t stat, rad cap, hoses, fan clutch and it does not show HG symptoms. Turning heater on brings it back down.

Any chance there could be some truth to my hot trans oil affecting my radiator's ability to cool my engine??

I guess there's a chance, but I don't think it would cause an overheating issue. I may not be the best person to answer this since I'm no cooling expert.
 
im guessing your trans is chitting the bed and heating the fluid to the point of over heating the coolant like [MENTION=96329]the1998sr5[/MENTION] said. get a used trans, put an external cooler on it, bypass the radiator and never look back

-i dont know how many times this comes up, but when it does its never been with a truck that has a bypassed radiator and external trans cooler, hum odd...

after the new trans is in i bet your overheating issues go away, if not, then try a coolant flush.

Maybe I'll just sell it, and get a Tacoma. Might be easier. :lol:
