Noise at low speed

I will try to describe this the best I can...

I recently bought a 1993 Runner V6 in excellent condition. But there is a persistent sound coming from the truck that I would like nail down.

It occurs only at low speeds – mostly wen I'm pulling away from a stop sign, cruising on a residential street or pulling up into my drive.

The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like a slow propeller or a fan moving slowly through the wind. Or maybe like one of those Turbo Diesel Mercedes when it's sitting idle. Not as loud but that sort of airy pulsing sound.

That's the best I can do to explain it I guess.

Any ideas based on what I've shared?

Sounds like you have a serious problem here. Vehicles are not supposed to have propellers. If yours has one it needs to be removed. Second, it's a Toyota. If you have a mercedes diesel under the hoow I would replace it with the proper Toyota engine. Hope this helps!








In all seriousness, we need more info. It's too hard to give good advise based on a vague described noise. If needed, take a video of it and post it here.

I realize the description is vague and useless without some sort of audio illustration. I'll do my best to provide that after work today.

Actually (and I forgot to mention this) it happens when I'm sitting idle and rev the engine to about 3000. So I suspect that would eliminate anything in the wheels/brakes.

Well, sounds from the back but while stopped puts it in your exhaust. The easiest would be if it's the muffler or Cat, or a connection of those things or a hole somewhere along the way.

If not, then you'd move up into the engine, with sounds that carry on through.

Ok, I think I have conjured up a similar sound to what I'm hearing.

So at the risk of turning this thread into a complete joke, if you were to make a soft, quick "chug-chug-chug-chug" sound similar to a toy train I think you would have a good idea of what I'm hearing.

More of the story...

The local Toyota dealer did an oil change yesterday so I took it back them to see if they could figure out what was going on. They decided to put heavier oil in it and that seems to have dampened the sound a bit. They said there's no way of knowing exactly what the issue is without tearing the engine apart.

I'm still anxious to know what's going on, though.
