noise comming from the rear of my 4runner limited

I heard my Limited do this as well - I made it go away doing the same thing you did - a couple days later I was thumbing through the owners manual and saw on page 22 a section titled "For Your Information" - The second bullet says "Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine". I read this and it makes sense to me that this is what i heard because the sound was very close to the fuel filler/tank area. It says "Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check, and it does not indicate a malfunction". Hope this helps!!

Love this forum. I just heard this while in the garage. It totally freaked me out as my car is just a day old. It just happened to be about 5 hours since I drove. Now I know not to worry...

So glad I found this forum! First time Toyota owner (bought my SR5/P in May, and a Rav4 for our daughter this week). Had my truck in the shop for a front end noise yesterday (of course, they couldn't find it), then when my husband went into our garage this morning he heard a hissing noise from the rear end. Scared me to death - I just knew I was headed back to the dealer!

We just bought a 19 TRD off-road on July 4th and I have heard it 3 times since. Mostly in morning when I leave for work. It usually has been setting for 7 or 8 hours and 70 to 75 degrees at night here in NC. Just another thing to kill the battery.

Airing down driver rear tire this morning and heard a sound which sounded like an air leak, thought I picked up a nail. Turned engine off and noise was gone. Started truck again and noise came back. Almost sounds like a leak of some sort accompanied with the noise of the pump if I place my ear close to the bottom of the tank/skid plate.

Hard to place but the hissing/air leak sound seems to be in the vicinity of the top of the fuel tank.

Went to air back up later on with the engine running and the noise was still present.

Truck has approx 1700 miles.

Any ideas?

EVAP system working. If you had an issue, you would get a CEL.

Only reason it caught my attention was the day before when I aired up/down with the engine at idle, I heard nothing and then heard it today at idle.

Saw some mentions of it on a Tacoma forum but nothing on the 4runners except the purge with the engine off.

holy crap. thank you forum. i was just in the garage and my 4runner was humming/vibrating. I thought for sure something was broken. I've owned it for 5 years and I've never heard it.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you get a CEL.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm a new owner of a 2022 4R Limited and walked into the garage yesterday evening and heard this same pump noise from the left rear of my truck. It sounded like an pump for a air suspension system, and given it doesn't have air suspension I assumed it was the fuel pump. But given the vehicle had been sitting still for several hours prior, it didn't make sense. Now with 5 minutes of investigation on this forum, it makes perfect sense thanks to all of you!
