Noise level question for T4R owners with roof racks

I just edited this post, cuz I realized I put T4R owners on the title and I realize everybody looking at this thread is probably a T4R owner, so it's kinda redundant. I must have had a few beers.

Anyway, I found a great deal on a Yakima Loadwarrior roof rack for 207$ including shipping on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yakima-Load...es&hash=item3f17bb9083&vxp=mtr#ht_5291wt_1141

I've read through various threads on here, http://www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions/58344-show-us-your-rack.html, though it's been awhile since I did so and I can't remember owners talking much about noise. I've heard from various people that most racks are noisy and reduce mpg.

What are your experiences? Reduced mpg? Insane banshee scream? Or an awesome device used for hauling extra gear, mounting aux lights, and carrying spare tires?

I'm contemplating a rack cuz I want somewhere to mount extra lights and put a spare tire and don't want a rear tire rack. However, if noise and reduced mpgs is truly a problem, I might take another route. Thanks in advance to anybody who replies.

i only hear the noise with the sun shade open, and even then i have to listen for it, but when i open the sunroof then its loud, but its not screaming or whisteling -but i dont have a yakima rack either.
as far as the mpg loss, i have a wall of lights on the front of mine, so that really plays into it also...

I couldn't drive down the freeway with my last roof rack and the sunroof open. Even with my beefed up stereo it sounded like a wind tunnel.
 
Thanks guys, I appreciate the replies. I figure a mile difference on mpgs isn't bad, but you start talking another 2-3 on top of the bigger tires and upgrades I've done and plan on doing, I might be getting to beefy V8 territory, though mpg isn't my main concern.

As for noise, yeah, I have a bigger stereo as well, but my truck drives and sounds perfect about now. The PO must have installed some kind of aftermarket exhaust, cuz my truck has an aggressive growl and I haven't even done the deckplate mod or elbow mod yet. I suppose it's all about balance. I just need to decide if the potential downsides are worth the potential upsides.

I've never dealt with SMS Offroad before, but they have excellent seller reviews. These are the cheapest prices I've seen thus far on Yakima racks. You might get lucky and score one on Craigslist, but the two I saw here in Socal are actually more expensive than just buying the racks new. One guy wanted 350$ for a Loadwarrior rack without an extension.

Hey SCRunner, the same company has multiple racks for sale. They also have extensions for both the Load and Megawarrior racks. Definitely seems like a great deal. Like I said, you can probably search Craigslist for months and not find such a good deal unless you get lucky. If you want one man, go for it.
 
What are you limited to putting on these things? Would a spare fit up there without having to add extra support bars
