noise/ thump sound

it seams like when im driving through town etc.. that there is this thump sound after I take my foot off of the break pedel from sitting at a red light ...

it almost sounds like the thump sound when your car sits for days on end during the winter .... as the breake pads freeze to the rotors and when they break free there is that thump sound...

it does it in my 08 limited and it when i use to have a 07 sport... being that it did it in both, i kinda thought its normal, but I dont know ...

can any of the experts give me any info ?

Rubbing sound?

My 06 4Runner started making a similar sound about a year ago. It's almost like a rubbing of metal sound. Only happens when I'm letting go of the brake at a red light, and as far as I am recalling right now, only early in the drive. I had the brakes replaced after the sound started, but it didn't go away.

I had one dealer say my CV boot needs to be replaced when they did my oil change. However, I do not trust that dealer and have stoppped taking my car there. The time before that they said my one-year-old tires need to be replaced. The time after, they said my V6 timing BELT had to be changed. I specifically asked him if he was sure on that and they guy said "Yep, I looked at it myself. I could see cracks." I have not taken my car back there since and nobody else has said anything about my CV boot.

its not like a metal scraping sound likie when your rotors get suface rust on them from just sitting in the rain for days ...

, on both vehicles I had good breaks and rotors....

its more like a thump when I release the break pedel when the traffic light turns green...

sorry to all ... I did do a search on this, but couldnt find anything ...
 
I think you are feeling the "toyota driveshaft bump". Try greasing the zerk fitting on the slip yoke first. You really have to pump some grease in there, like 20 pumps. Then add a couple pumps every oil change. This has worked for me for the last 110k miles.

If this does not work for you, I think toyota has a TSB out for this now that may apply to your 4runner.

Toyotas are not alone with this issue. My 2012 f150 was doing it bad. Only bad thing was Ford was too cheap to install a grease zerk on the slip yoke so I had to install one. Nice and smooth now.
 
One thing I might add to the above post is that stiffer suspension will help ease this condition. The thumb you describe will be more significant if you brake harder and introduce more flex into the rear suspension causing the driveshaft to lengthen. As you begin to accelerate the driveshaft gets pushed back in the slip yoke and "clunks". A stiffen suspension combined with gentler braking will usually make this "clunk" disappear.
 
its only when in say for example sitting at a dead stop at a traffic light ,

if i ease off the break when the light turns green its not as bad .
if i take my foot off the break quick all at once the thump is more obvious , its almost like when the thump happens i get a little push from it ...
 
Yes, that is your driveshaft binding up. Hence the recommendation to grease the slip yoke. See above. Good luck.
 
Had the same problem...just needed to grease the driveshaft.
I do get a similar feeling now while I am stopped at a red light (before letting off the brakes). Feels like the T4R wants to take off without me...

This has been happening to mine since last year, always thought it was something with the brakes. Please post pics and what happens after you grease it!!
 
It is for sure the infamous driveshaft clunk, thunk, shake, etc. I also thought it was brake related when I first had it. Happens to all 4th gens.

There must be dozens of threads on it and a technical service bulletin as well. It's harmless but annoying enough that I replaced my shaft this past summer with an upgraded model they came out with in 2011 or 12. It's the only way to completely eliminate it. Greasing works for only a short time before it returns.
 
I just bought a used 2008 limited and can only find 4 zerks are there really eight or did toyota reduce the number on later models ??
