Nokian Hakka's 5 SUV studded vs. Pirelli Scorpion ATR

OK somewhat unfair but I have been a huge fan of the Pirelli tires. Traveled in snow, ice across the Yukon with them last year and was sold. I had put off the purchase of studded tires for just that reason, they seemed competent. The down side was on ice, and several times last winter I slid on glare ice. That was the reason that I bought the Nokians and today they proved themselves worthy. Snow turned to rain, rain froze and roads turned to an icerink in my neighborhood.

The studs on the Nokians bite into the ice preventing sliding beyond 1 or 2 feet. No doubt they are superior. I gained confidence and safety. worth the high price? I think so as they are easily 80% more effective on ice and the ice under snow than the Scorpions. I feel good, but poorer. bring it ON!! :hungry:

Just personal preferences but I would never buy studded tires. I hate hearing those things on dry pavement.:barf: :lmao:

I know what you mean. I have gotten used to the noise. I figured if it saves me one accident and one $500.00 deductible they have paid for themselves.:bluejump:

I looked at the Scorpions awhile back myself....but as with anything I did a lot of research and found that the ATR seems to have some MAJOR flaws. Sitting overnight...the tires will develop flat spots...especially in cold weather...then they will do the "whop whop" for about 5 miles until they heat up. Over time this leads to sidewall breakdown and separation from the tread. Read MANY accounts of this happening.

Ultimately, I passed on the Scorpions for a tire I've had great luck w/ in the past.....the BFG All-Terrain.

(Kinda off subject I know...sorry, LOL)
