nOOb hello and What is this thing?

Hi guys!

I've been lurking here for a bit and appreciate the helpful info I've found here! I am working on a 2001 t4r that is my girlfriend's. It's a bone stock 2001 with 160k on the clock. I've been doing some PM/tune up stuff to keep it proper, but no modding as she isn't interested in that, yet

I've been searching for some info on what this is, but have had no luck. It's the cylinder to the left of the brake fluid resevoir. I was thinking some kind of a brake booster?

The reason why I ask is that in my 2001 I can hear it buzzing frequently and then it stops when a solenoid of some type clicks. The solenoid sounds like it is towards the front right of the engine compartment. It doesn't buzz all of the time, but as it said, it does buzz frequently.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

thank you thank you thank you palmetto! good news to know this is normal. I still find it odd that toyota would do this, but at least it's really only noticeable when the radio is off!
