So I'm in the market for a runner had a 1st gen way back when and loved it. My question is how do people come up with the outrageous price tag a lot of the ones I'm looking at are 15 to 20 years old with well over 100k now I'm no hardcore Toyota guy but some of the prices are crazy esp 3rd gens. I'm just wondering why people ask 9 grand for a 20 year old car with high mileage. Can someone school me on this.

I'm gonna jump in here just because i know some of the others are real busy. 100k is not that high of milage for a 3rd gen. and to be honest, Like anything for sale it's what ever the market will bare. Have a nice day. :tea:

I too was surprised at the price of the 3nd gens. I ended up with a 4th gen instead for not too much more than some of the 3rd I looked at (I just paid $13,600 for a '06 4WD Limited). Of course when you look at the original sticker price of some of these trucks, the price suddenly seems more reasonable. I don't know what 3rd gens sold for but 4th gens like mine were close to $40k new.
My guess is that the 3rd's are still really desirable because it's a better base to build on for an off-roader. People wouldn't be charging so much if someone wasn't buying them.

yep, I would consider 100k to be low miles for that year.
because everyone wants to spend the least possible. no matter what it is.
the market dictates the price, the reason they can list/sell for those prices, is because they are selling.
also, Toyotas do not depreciate like other brands. they hold their value very well.

If its stock ur after then it makes it easier to compare prices on say edmunds, that's usually the site i start with for a fair price. If you're after one modded up then you can add the price you're willing to pay for those mods to the basic edmunds price. I aim for wholesale prices but we all know that is not easy to find for a 3g tr4, won't stop me from trying! Found the one below between whsle and private party yet it still felt 'expensive' 3 years ago at 6500.

The market is about what it should be for the reliability. I discovered this place while shopping for my wife's 2002 T4R.
I wanted a comparable reliable vehicle for her, based on my 2003 Tacoma experience. Now the poor thing is neglected because I'm in love with her truck.
