What is the point to overdrive? WHen its on or off?

Overdrive transmission is great to have if you do a lot of highway driving b/c it will give you an additional gear above the normal high gear in a transmission. It reduces engine RPM on the highway, allowing less wear and tear, noise and will improve fuel mileage. If you plan to use your 4R for quick jaunts around town, you won't see the difference.

there are alot of opinions on this. from my reading on other boards overdrive should be on when you are on highway or at a speed greater than 40mph(dont quote me). o/d is best to turn off when your tranny is searching for gears and shifting back and forth, especially when going up steep hills and/or towing. Its just your 4th gear so by turining it off you will only get to 3rd gear. Best thing to to is just keep it on unless towing or goin up steep hills.. Now there are ways to manipulate the o/d by locking your torque convertor for extra power when on the highway but thats another tangent....also read your manual as it will tell you that using o/d off in combintaion with selecting the gear 1, or 2, you can get engine braking.

it's like a NOS button. turn it on and you could probably feel more boost.
