Nor Cal Camping, Wheeling, BS and photo dumping - 2020

I have heard it has gotten more difficult over the past year plus with new rock areas. I friend with a JKUR on 37's has no issues, but i don't think its as easy as it used to be.

Interesting, 37's with solid axles and disconnecting sways is bit out of 4runner range.

I wonder if they closed that pass down for bunch of years because it became so hard people were getting stuck and rangers got sick of rescuing people.

rochmpr do you think deer valley is doable from the 4? I hit Deer Valley end from the Blue Lakes area from the 88.

Deer Valley is a good precursor to the Rubicon. It's tight, rocky and relentless. The gate keeper on the 4 side is a warning of what is to come. Sliders are a must.

Got it, rocks and more rocks.. Rubicon gets extra help with all the commercial rock stacking and by passes, but i'm guessing deer valley being obscure has the realness about it, which actually makes it hard...

Sliders, lift, 33s, minimum at most Tahoe things, I hear if you start from 88 since you're going down hill it makes it doable on 33'. Would down hill make it doable on a standard 33 tire, 3 inch lift, sliders? Is it easier then slick rock?

Well we got to the top. All Trails changed the trail from moderate to hard. Sparky 97Runner and I did a quick Signal Peak run today, the mud pit dried up a bit, but still poses a challenge.. see the vid

We made a two bypass for the mud pit on memorial weekend.
Made it to the top in 40min

There might be camping over July 4th weekend, but I haven't been to your neighborhood, is Hollister worth 5 hour drive (round trip)?

Also mid July might be another camping thing off the 80.

5 hour drive for Hollister? Not worth it. I don't even think it's worth it for 3hrs round trip from where I am. You'll have way more fun up in El dorado NF.

Will try to keep my schedule open for that. :becky:

Gravity can be you friend. Doable, most likely. Damage to be expected, most definitely.

I'm thinking of a Strawberry Pass trip on July 10th (Saturday), start from Caple Lake side (88) and get to 50.

I'm seeing weird reviews, in 2020 mildly built rigs had no issues, in May 2021 rigs with 34s were scraping. I wonder if it was snow melt and mud issues?

I did this few years back and there was only one real obstacle were you had to use your slider, maybe it was turned up during fall/winter. Does anyone know?

My club maintains Strawberry Pass trail. It was shut down due to NFS closures for environmental reasons (part of 42 trails closure years back). During the environmental remediation they remove many of the difficulties of the original trail to get equipment and materials through …. People running the trail while closed experienced that and not the actual 4x4 trail. My club is working with NFS to bring it somewhat back to glory. Target difficulty is 2 door Jeep on 35s.

I just ran it in June for our spring maintenance run. There are spots 33s with 3” would have trouble / might not be passable. You *might* make it … might need a tug or winch over the rocks. You should expect some undercarriage/ rocker panel damage though ….

But the view at the pass is definitely awesome ….

@%1; is right ….

I did it last fall in my 1st Gen. I would not do it in my 4th Gen (either direction). Just would not be a good experience IMHO.

I haven’t done Slick Rock yet … but as I understand it, after the reroute it is more difficult. I believe @%1; has done it/ tried it.

If you’re looking for something off HWY4 you might consider Corral Hollow. I think Espri De 4 just finished their trial maintenance on it earlier this month and it’s passable. It’s been a few years since I’ve done it but it was a good trail in my 4th Gen.

Agreed that Corral Hollow is a nice, easy, scenic trail. Best to start at Bear Valley in my opinion.

Its not a 4Runner, but it will wheel. ARB front and rear and 4:1 t-case. Looking forward to getting this on the trail

I did Corral Hollow in my bone stock suspension 98 with running boards still on. Other than one spot near the start of the trail where some with open diffs had some trouble it's a very chill trail. Nice views and meadows.

Strawberry Pass from 88 to 50 wasn't an issue. It got a lot tougher then right when it opened, but with some spotting only my sliders got a work out.

I could see how doing it up the hill (from 50 to 88) would be tough, I saw Jeeps on 38s struggle on some of the rocks.

Did a quick run on South Shingle Rd to Prairie City OHV with Sparky 97Runner

Strawberry Pass trail run (late notice).

I am going to run Strawberry Pass tomorrow (8/1) from Hwy 50 (near Strawberry Market) to Hwy 88 (near Caples Lake). With this late notice, I don't think there will be too many rigs, but please let me know if you are planning to come.

From the Roseville area it takes about 1.5 hours to get to Strawberry Market and 2 hours to get back from Caples Lake. The trail takes about 3 hours. If you like to tow your rig, getting home is almost as fast if you go east from Caples Lake to 89 and come back west on 50. Obviously, if it isn't highway legal, you can just run the trail in reverse.

You don't need a rock crawler though, the trail is a moderate to hard trail depending on your rig. I haven't run it, but have heard 33" tires and a moderate lift are needed, stock rigs will scrape the underside a lot. Lockers are not needed. My info may be old though, there is at least one post from this month (above) that says it is more difficult than the video I saw shows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6ndCde6aqo&feature=youtu.be

The plan is to meet at Strawberry Market at 11:00, have lunch at the top of the trail, and break up at Caples Lake. Reach out with any questions.
