Normal for knock when 4wd engaged?

I got stuck in some ice and engaged 4 high and noticed a decently loud knock. Ive never had 4wd, only AWD so I am not sure if this is expected. When I disengaged it I even put it in neutral just to see if that would prevent the knock, but it did not.

Is this normal?

You really need to be a lot more descriptive, knock doesn't tell us much. Like maybe what's knocking, or where it's coming from.

I would guess it is the transfer case. I should also mention that I have the electronic 4wd selection, not the shifter. As soon as it engages it sounds like it was forced into 4wd and same thing when I take it out. 4wd works fine, just think its weird that it makes strange noises.

A clunk sound when going into or coming out of 4wd or from 4hi to 4low is normal (Doesn't ALWAYS happen but does frequently), but just one clunk per transition.

After that, running in 4Hi or 4Low should not make anything but a little bit more gear noise if you listen closely, otherwise just as quiet as 2wd.

Did you guys get out in the snow yesterday? I went up to, and down from Black Hawk. Finally got into some snow! Was really excited until I was coming down I70 at 4pm and it got really sketchy with 3 lanes full of traffic going 30 mph. I forgot that I love snow driving until there are a bunch of morons around me who think their shiny new AWD system makes them god in the snow. - Seriously Audy guy, your new A4 will lose in hand to hand combat vs the Runner every time. You're not cool, you're just being a jackass and endangering everyone else on the road.

On topic: I don't get a knock when engaging/disengaging 4wd, but I have a lever, so it will grind on occasion instead. To those who know, what would cause the knock? Drivetrain windup? Accelerating while trying to engage or disengage?

I agree with this. The first time I shifted to low range I thought the transfer case was going to break. The more I shifted it it shifts nice and smooth now. Also if the transfer case oil is cold it will be a lot noisier than when it is warmed up.
After rereading the ops post I see he is getting a knock just engaging 4x4. My observation is not valid since I have full time 4x4. I only got the knock going into low range.

Yeah while I like cruising around in the snow I pretty much go to the grocery store or Starbucks since I don't have to get on the highway. To many morons driving around to bother most of the time. Not sure if you saw that apparently the bulk of snow accidents on the highways here in Colorado involve cars with inadequate tire tread, not even snow tires mind you just stupid people too cheap to be safe in a state that gets a ton of snow. Same thing when I'm in the high country, if I can avoid the highways I'm happier.

My wife has an Audi btw. Haha. She drives like a grandma though.
