Had quite the blast out at the dunes, 4Runner was a beast one I started to figure out what the hell I was doing. Dune running was something totally foreign, and took me most of the day to figure out that the old 5 speed didn't really shift itself right for the terrain, once I started holding the RPMs up it went from slow and steady to ripping up and over things.

I'll post a trip report once I consolidate some pics, but here's a few to share now.

Looks like a blast! Interesting mount for the flag.

These Runners come alive in the upper RPM range. That’s where the power comes in. It might feel like it’s struggling but you usually have to lean into the gas a bit, then she makes things happen.

After seeing numerous flag decals of other kinds, I reached out to a shop to have one made of the chicago flag.

Just curious as to the flag mounted. I typically just run the flag out my rear passenger window for the off road parks. Are they over particular about how it is mounted at the sand dunes?

Yea, super particular. It has to be mounted on the front bumper, 10' high, no exceptions. They turned away a few jeeps in front of me at the entrance for not having them mounted up front. Even then it was nearly impossible to see someone coming over a small dune at you.

Basically bent a piece of steel that went through the front tie down, snug against the frame with a bolt that went through a hole in the frame and then used a big ass metal washer with another rubber washer to snug it all down, worked super well, looked super ghetto. Tossed a pool noodle on any of the scratchy bits.

Badlands/Cliffs?

Anyone down to set something up for one of these two places? Badlands seems to be the preferred location from what I've seen/heard. I'd be down for any Saturday between now and Fall.

I could post something in the main forum and see if that gets more visibility of people are interested.

I have a friend going to Badlands this week but things are too chaotic for me. They should open up a little more next week where a trip down is possible. It’s been hard for me to take a full day.

If anyone wants to do a closer but much less exciting trip, that McHenry park isn’t awful. It’s also not super big or challenging. It’s easier for me to get there or to the Cliffs as well.

My schedule allows me to go during the week which I prefer if I’m driving down to Indiana so I don’t have to battle traffic.

Major mods: 2 sets (6 spoke and 7 spoke) of 5th gen wheels and taller tires, Daystar spacer lift kit, 1.25” wheel spacers, Yakima roof rack with 4 PIAA driving lights on rack, rock sliders, bull bar with fog lights, almost full LED light conversion interior and exterior, upgraded stereo eliminating entire JBL system, elimination of rear and side emblems (Toyota, 4runner, Limited 4WD) and V8 emblem in grille.

The McHenry off road park opens at 10 am. I’m thinking I’d prefer to get out earlier but I haven’t locked in a time. Let me know if anyone’s going and what time they’re thinking. I’m shooting for probably before 11.

I just had mud tires mounted on my stock rims. Now I have 3 sets: 255/75r17 A/T on the truck, 265/70r17 M/T on the stock rims, and 255/80r17 hybrid of AT/MT on the 7 spoke rims.

I use the A/T’s mid-April to mid-October, the hybrids (good in the snow) mid-October to mid-April, and I don’t know about the mud tires yet, maybe just for special occasions. The hybrids are 33” tall (33.1) and the other two sets are 32” (31.9 muds and 32.1 A/T’s).
