Nose Dive While Braking

This is what I am really after. I anxiously await a reply. If coils were replaced, is there a recommendation as to which ones for stock height? I do not mind the stiffer ride but do not want to lift.
I am here to tell you that OEM coils on 5100s makes a slight improvement in the nose dive but nothing drastic. If anything it lessens body roll on turns better. I plan on dropping my setting to .85 and getting OME coils
 
man Im glad I saw this before asking the same question haha yall are brutal. Those saying 5100 fixed it did you swap coils? I have 5100s and it helped some but it didn't come close to eliminating it.

If you think this is brutal, you have pretty thin skin.

I am not familiar with any stock height coil options, and if anything heavier coils, even of the same height, would make you ride higher because you would sag less when weight is applied.

In some systems, EBD distributes more braking pressure at the rear brakes during initial brake application before the effects of weight transfer become apparent.

its my opinion, they must have gotten it just a little off for the 5th gen.

I have seen many newer vehicles wear the rear brakes out prior to the fronts. it used to be a 2:1, front to rear, but I am now seeing almost the opposite of that. I expect, due to the above.


I don't own a 5th gen, but can anyone tell me what brake life is like on them? which end wears faster?

A word on "brake bias:"

Simply put, the 4Runner weighs more in the front than in the back. While you guys might THINK brakes stop a vehicle what really stops the vehicle is the friction between the tire and the road. Now, knowing this, there is a maximum braking effort that can be applied to each tire and this number involves the weight being carried by that tire and the coefficient of friction between the rubber and road. If a vehicle is heavier in front than in back then the back will get a higher bias in order to apply the same torque through to the calipers, which will in turn stop the vehicle uniformly without wanting to lock up one axle or the other.
Another little item is brakes aren't only applied when the vehicle is traveling in a straight line. Sometimes you have to brake in curves and that brings in a whole host of other mathematics.
Simply put, in the 4Runner the brakes are fine and the bias is fine. I have yet to read about one axle or the other locking up in a stop nor about one axle having much higher brake pad wear than the other.

Now, to address nose dive:
If you don't like the nose dive then put on heavier front springs. Simple. You will get a rougher ride but hey, your front end won't dip as much during braking. Or you could just learn how to apply the brakes in a nice, smooth fashion. You should all have discovered this during your test drive and if it bothered you so much you should not have purchased the vehicle.

Edit for [MENTION=84120]nevada[/MENTION] judging by the overwhelming majority of posts here both the front and rear tend to wear uniformly and most go past 70K before needing pads. Also the 5th gen has one of the shortest stopping distances out there.

EBD isn't changing timing, it uses abs to dynamically bias the pressure by selectively modulating brakes (rather than doing it hydraulically)

and it isn't changing the dynamic weight change, in fact the whole reason for it is because of the dynamic weight change

i don't know about pad wear, but keep in mind that rear pads usually start out thinner

understood. im just saying, I think that got their calculations slightly off. perhaps im wrong, but again, why wasn't this as big of a problem on previous years, and vehicles?

yes, they are smaller. but, prior to EBD, you would typically go through 2 sets of fronts, to one set of rears. mostly with a disc/drum application. in fact, usually with drums, it was almost 3:1. but now we are seeing rear brakes(disc mostly) wearing out a lot faster on most vehicles. because they are able to get more stopping power from the rear, without fear of lock up due to advanced ABS systems.

im not talking out of my ass here. I see it every day. there has been a big shift it how/when brakes wear out compared to before.

is it really so far out of the question, that they could have gotten it wrong?

they aren't perfect, far from it. they make mistakes. hell, my 06 is up for a recall on the SRS, due to a programming error. THAT was a mistake.. they got it wrong. its not outside the realm of possibility.

you 5th gen guys are funny. you will defend your purchase to the end :D
 
yes, im fully aware of all that. I still believe Toyota screwed up when designing this brake system. this isn't nearly as much of an issue on other similar sized SUV's, nor the previous generations of the 4runner.
thats just simply not true. the 4th gen has the same "issue". the suspension on the 4th gen is actually softer than that of the 5th gen. there is a couple guys who swapped the springs from a 5th gen into their 4th gens and gained a 3/4 - 1" lift out of it. my dads 5th gen actually stops in a smoother, more level fashion than mine and he runs the softest OME springs in the front of his and i run Toytec BOSS coilovers.

The only time I notice any dive is when I have to apply the brakes suddenly(getting cut off in ATX traffic, deer, old ladies jaywalking, etc) and after a year I have learned to adjust my driving habits to effectively eliminate this issue for the most part.

i think the reason we keep seeing it pop up in the 5th gen section is because the 5th gen is still the current offering so you get a ton of first time buyers. Since the 4th gen is now going on 13 years old most of us have either owned them for a good amount of time or have owned other 4x4 suvs/trucks. i think once the 5th gen gets a little older and the 6th generation comes out, whenever that will be, well see the issue start back over again in the new section. The 4th gen is to the point in age where we dont care about warranties or for me sheetmetal, were almost to the point the extreme mods like the 3rd gens. every time i come over to the 5th gen section i see a good amount of newbie or just ignorant questions and some answers, not that its a bad thing everyone has to start somewhere. but its just what to expect when your generation of runner is the hot shit.

I had a 2010 Limited 2WD and felt the same way. My 2016 SR5P 4x4 is quite a different story. Lots of dive with even moderate braking. Maybe the brake pads are so new they really grab. :doh: Just decided to live with it for now. Trying to decide if I want to lift it any but haven't made my mind up.

Can we all agree it's soft springs and suspension with a lot of mass? Upgrading the suspension is the only solution.

I can agree.

From what I gather from this post, Bilstien 5100's will help. OME springs will further help. Is there is any other suggestions?

This solution should provide satisfactory results. So now you just have to figure out if you're going to lift it or level it since you're already into the meat of it.

Brake dive doesn't bother me, but it's been present on every vehicle I have ever driven, especially large ones. That includes my 3rd and 4th gens. I never said Toyota was flawless, but they are far better than others. I definately have less body roll and nose dive on my 5th gen than I did on my 3rd, 4th gen 4runners and 2nd Gen tacoma. Much better stopping power too.
