BMW needs to stick to bada$$ N/A motors. E30 m3 S14, M52, E46 M3, E34 M5. I know this is not an exclusively M built motor but I still think a turbo BMW motor would be a little sketchy for the first year or so especially when the company is known for building reliable yet powerful N/A motors.

I guess that the argument for BMW is that a small engine is easier to package (esp. since BMW is sticking with in-line engines) and is not as heavy (thus, good for handling). In-line sixes are known for smoothness, free-revving, and low-end power. Unfortunately for BMW, Lexus 3.5L V6 are as smooth (or nearly so), as free-revving, and much more powerful.
The next M3 engine will be V8 NA engine. We will see what happens when it comes out. Audi already has a 400HP V8 in their RS4.

my 88 bmw had a 3.5 litre inline six in it. the e30 motor.. the m5s had the m30 in it.
they downsized the motors a bit :/

Car and Driver just did a minitest on the 335i:
0-60 = 4.9
0-100 = 12.1
1/4 mile = 13.6 at 105 mph
Braking 70-0 = 160
Street start 5-60 = 5.6
So, if it's reliable & durable (BIG question mark!), then it should give the IS350 a real good run for the money. The numbers above mirrors the M3!!

Found this post very interesting!
My brother in law just purchased a new BMW 335i,
300hp, 300 lbs touque...6 speed.I have to say it is incredible looking throughout...however he lost....6 times in a row.... I think that the is350 HP of 306 may be under rated...any thoughts on this...

No comparisons yet. All the other vehicles in the class had their cages rattled with the HP/performance of the IS. The TL, G35, 335i and IS are now (07) very close and on any given day anyone of the four could be a hair ahead. I think there is something to Toyota engines/vehicles being able to perform better then what you would think when you look at just the HP number. They seem to be able to run about 10% better then their HP rating.

This used to be true in 2006 when Toyota (and Honda) started to use the new SAE ratings, while the other manufacturers (BMW, MB, etc.) were still using the old SAE measurements. Thus, it made Toyota seem to underrate their vehicles. Therefore, in 2006, an IS350 with only 306 HP can beat a car with 310 HP because the IS350 is making around 315 HP if you used the old SAE measurements. And as you noticed, an IS350 can blow the doors off a GS430, who is still using old SAE ratings last time i checked.
However, for 2007 models, most manufacturers are adapting the new SAE ratings. For example, the brandnew '07 Infiniti G35 sedan is only making a tiny bit more power (on paper) than the '06 sedan. However, if you look closely, Infinity has adapted the new SAE ratings. Therefore, the new '07 G35 is making a lot more power than the '06 model...and this is confirmed by Car & Driver's recent testing of the new G35.

With the new SAE measurements, you won't see much of under- or overrating of engine power. Everything can be accounted for by looking at gear ratios, tranny ratios, and HP/Torque ratings.
