i picked up a sport hood last weekend. went to local body shop for est on paint around $400.00...:wow: so iam going to paint it myself i know its all about prep. just need advice on what i need as in what grit sand paper. when to use what grit when to wet ir dry sand.i plan on painting the scoop black then the rest of the hood white. how long do i wait before i can tape off one color to paint the outher? any other suggestions would be greatly appreacited.

I would shop around for other estimates. Bodywork is not something you want to take the DIY route on.
 
I'm pretty sure the scoop part comes out. take it out and paint it separately. also what kind of paint are you going to use
 
If you don't have any real imperfections to fix,then wet sand it with a 400 grid so it's baby-butt smooth. And the scoop part should come out, so no need to worry about masking and taping.

I wouldn't worry about dry sand, unless you have to do body work on it.

But like others have said, I'd shop around. Find someone willing to spray it for you if you wet sand it to save you some money.

It's been a lot of years since I wet sanded, but the process probably hasn't changed much so it's pretty easy to do.

i have done some paint work before just nothing two tone.its all ways nice when people complement on it and you can say that you did it.i was wanting to paint it myself anyway wuth the estiments just made me want to do it more. i did ck other body shops the cheapest was $300.00 and that was without painting the inside of the hoop

yes i scoop insert comes out what iam talking about is the scoop part on the hood painting it . so the hood it self will be two colors. going th have carquest match paint to the paint code..

thanks for the info. iam going to paint the hood its self two colors. white on both sides of the scoop and then the scoop black.i dont want to tape up to paint the second color and peel off the frist color.sry if wasnt clear on that..
 
I paint for a living, a hood is easy. Follow the instruction mentioned above, and make sure you paint if flat vs. standing up, your paint will go on better with less chance of runs.
 
Yep, I'd get several more quotes. Do you have an air compresser and a DA (dual action) sander? If so, 400 on that works really well, you can either feather out the chips or fill them with some icing. Red scotch brite also works well for contours and stuff, just make sure its all well scuffed with NO shiny spots or wour paint WILL peel. As for taping off the scoop, it depends on what paint you use and the temperature. When I painted the stripes on my stang I only had to wait for about 45 minutes in between. It was about 55 outside.

yes on the air compressor and da sander. this hood is not painted and is primer black. it all so has been sitting in a garage for a few years has lots of shinny spots on it. was going to clean it with acidtone i think thats what its called.
 
I use a mix of Toluene and Isopropyl alcohol. If it's in good shape you should only have to rough up the existing primer, wipe down and prime again. do you have a spray gun?

yes in the spray gun. i have pretty much everything i need. i know enough to get me in trouble. i ck it over it is in good shape. just a few scratches. no dings or creases. i think you are right rough it up. wipe it down. primer ck for imperfections. repair as needed. wet sand if needed. then paint.
 
I think by the time you're done with this, you'll realize $400 was pretty reasonable for a professional job.

I'm all for the DIY but paint work isn't cheap if you want it done right. Materials are expensive. Paint booths are expensive. Labor is expensive. I'd actually shy away from any shop that quoted me much less than that.
