so I have been wanting better headlights for my 4runner, well, I saw my eye doctor yesterday and complained about night vision,as well as other things. seems I have cataracts starting . Too many years in the snow and on the water does not help. the cataracts make light go crazy places in snow and rain. She actually said that brighter lights could almost be worse for glare and scatter in my eyes.
she thought that antiglare yellow lenses might help ( glasses)
but hey StreetCreeper, I don't have glycoma.......
Getting old sucks (64)

Yeah we all know a good remedy for high inner eye pressure... :D

I looked into night driving glasses a while back. I don't have a medical need, I just hate all the dipshits out there driving around with crappy or improperly aimed headlights.

Anyways, I remember reading this blog post about them saying that they actually aren't good for night driving. IDK...something to think about I guess.

I hear ya, my vision is not what it used to be especially at night. I have readers now for small type.

thanks for that link, guess I will rethink them, I do know that when plowing snow, ( I do that 3 or 4 times a week since novemeber) yellow lesnses do help with contrast.

I could not agree more with with you on this one!!! I wish the F'n cops would do a lot more enforcement. I have talked to about 20 of them asking why the hell they don't give out tickets. NOT ONE EVEN KNEW THEY ARE ILLEGAL!!!!! A FEW OF THEM ARE STATE TROOPERS....AND ITS RIGHT ON THEIR F'N WEBSITE THEY ARE ILLEGAL.

Edit...I'm still pissed at the cops.....they write tickets for no F'n front license plate, tail lights out, no F'n Mud Flaps, Tires Too Big, but not for some selfish person blinding everyone! Ok...ok...I'll let it go for another five minutes.

OH...as I'm sure your aware....that stuff you noticeably enjoy....literally blows your pupils wide open with no Myosis. So we have found a solution to your particular light sensitivity. LOLOLOLO

I want a BB gun to shoot out all the HID conversions I pass at night going to work. My anti-glare prescription glasses work good for my night vision.

Try jogging at night; all the idiots with their hi beams on it becomes blinding at times. And the worst have to be the HID/xeon wannabe crowd of brodozer morons. For the OP, test use some anti glare glasses at night for the best fit.

In jogging at night for years I can say that over the years many more people now use their hi beams. I'd guess due to staring at computer and phone screens for hours on end daily.

I'd actually never considered that. I love my weed but I never drive under the influence — so it never occurred to me that my eyes could still be dialated long after the fact. I'll look into it though, you might be on to something!

At least you have something for when you get tired of Bilstein.

Oh man don't ge me started on those brodozer idiots. Saw one about a month ago with 3 full size light bars. One in the bumper area, second one was mounted over hood/cowl area (couldn't see it well enough to see how it was mounted) and a third one was on the roof above the windshield. This was during the day, so thankfully they weren't on.

I just shook my head.

Hey 3Bears,

Check this link out: https://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/lights/light_color/light_color.html

Coating your headlights with a thin layer of either kaplan tape, or a thin coat of duplicolor metal cast gold will effectively filter out the limited quantity of Blue and Cyan wavelength light produced by a halogen bulb.

Buy a non-coated, +30 or +60 9003 bulb from Phillips or GE (Sylvania is crap, they got taken to court last year due to their blatant lies and marketing), so you retain good element luminosity, and this will make up for the little bit of total light lost by going selective yellow.

Im doing this to my 4runner as soon as I get some decent weather. I dont have cataracts, but I do have an astigmatism in each eye, and do lots of night driving.

But in your case, you may find using a selective yellow lensed pair of glasses may work better, as they will help with any lights coming your way.

You may have noticed the trend of some auxiliary lighting, especially LED based lighting, being offered in Amber. Theyre trying to do the same thing as tinting to selective yellow, remove the first wavelengths that can interact with particles or moisture in the air. They take it a step further, and filter out Green wavelengths, which, IMO, is far from ideal, given how much green there is along a typical road. But its the same principle. PIAA have their "ion yellow" LED bars, but Ive seen them in action, and was very underwhelmed given their pricetag.

They are just as bad in semi rural North Carolina. The light bars and Soot Life window decals are standard with the brodozers and their truck whore girlfriends. One was so lit up one night I wasn't sure ET would have mistaken his ship for the truck at hand. Now the light bars on the top of the cabs are hanging off at least a foot off each side.

I haven't seen the light bars hanging off the sides yet around here. Can only laugh at the idea that the brodozer crowd have figured out yet another way to make their trucks look goofy as f*#K.

I saw this gem a year or two ago — had to go around the parking lot and snap a pic. Nobody would have believed me if I didn't.

When you see it...

I did not think it was legal to have yellow headlights

Its legal. White and yellow. Otherwise every underpowered sealed beam, faded and fogged plastic headlight with the oem's super ultra long life bulb wouldnt pass inspection.

Ill pull up fmvss 108 and pull up the applicable subsection.

It's not legal where I live (New Jersey):

39:3-50 Color of lights, permits; cancellation or revocation of permits; fee.

39:3-50 . All lamps and reflectors, which display a light visible from directly in front of a vehicle as authorized by this subtitle, shall exhibit lights substantially white, yellow or amber in color.

(a)The color of light emitted or reflected by exterior lamps or reflectors on a vehicle shall be as follows, except as otherwise provided in paragraphs (b), (c) and (d) of this section:

White when the lamp is a headlamp, or spot lamp, or illuminates a license plate or a destination sign; or is located on the outside limit of a side car or other attachment on a motor cycle;

Motor Vehicle Articles, 39 Motor Vehicle laws and Municipal Court: 39:3-50 Color of lights, permits; cancellation or revocation of permits; fee.

I assure you there are lots and lots of original OEM lights that after 20-30 years of service don't meet the original standard. That is not the issue at hand. The issue at hand is aftermarket installation of light producing elements not compatible with the original design.

HID and LED are totally legal in the OEM settings....you just cant buy them for $30 bucks off Flea bay or Chinese Junk sites.

Please post where it says you can have white or amber (yellow) colored head lights in Oregon. Not hating at all...education is huge...if I'm ignorant to reality...I am on lots of things....I like being educated.

Remember....it requires the entire section....not just a subsection or portion of a sub section to actually be the full law. Our politicians are masters at word F'n a hour (multi page) speech/law to suit their wants. We are way better than them!
