ok so i have been getting the dam p0420 cel code now for few weeks, i have a 1999 with cali emmsions, i have replaced both the front and rear o2 sensors and im still getting a check engine light p0420.....so what am i suppose to do spend 1200 dollars on two new cats.....im ready to go outside pour gas on it and burn the ****ing thing....some one have any help or suggestions :bash:

Well... if you are going to burn it to the ground, part it out first. (that's a joke)

I haven't had my T4R very long but is one of cats more likely to go out than the other.

If you have a wrecking yard in town, maybe you can pick one up them up there on the cheap.

Another option... can the computers on these be tuned (like subaru, mistubishi, etc)? If so you can have the code turned off.

I would kill the cats personally...make 'em go sleep with the fishes! Seriously though, did you reset the ECM or "clear the codes" after replacing the O2's? If so, how long did it take for the CEL to respond with a new code? Minutes or days? If minutes, I would say look at your wiring. If hours/days, I would suggest engine fuel management as a suspect. O2's are extremely sensitive to changes in fuel/air mixture ratios. If you're not experiencing any other severe engine drive-ability issues, the cats are not to blame, although they still make better anchors! :gun6:
 
i installed the rear last week. and check engine light came on, so i ordered the front one and installed it late last night drove to work around town then took long lil trip and the light came back on again...im frustraded and not wanting to spend 1200 on 2 new cats.........could it be a coolant temp sensor setting code off??
 
I had a similar situation that happened almost 2 years ago..

the po420 would just keep coming back..

I finally broke down this year and switched out both of the o2's with Denso's.

is there any way you can get an after-market cat and weld it on there?

What brand of O2 sensors did you replace with?

He's had multiple threads with this issue and I found one where he said he had Bosch sensors in there. Hopefully those have been replaced with Denso.

All you really need to do is put a Chevy emblem on the grille. Something about that symbol causes spontaneous combustion

They are "out of stock" for the 1GR, 5VZ and the 3UR, I wonder if they are getting the squeeze from MD emissions officials.
 
there both brand new bosch sensors. and when i check it with scan tool it says p0420 catylest below thresh hold bank1 then it has another code saying same thing but its pending......im getting really frustrated i dont wanna go buy 2 more new o2s just becasue there not denso's only to find out the check engine light comes back on again......
 
any one have any ideas??? wil the urd or o2 sim work with cali emissions....or what about aftermarket cali cats? im gogin to try the spark plug non foulers trick first since its cheap.......any other ideas
 
I just ordered a URD simulator 10 minutes ago. I did it out of fear that they were going to stop offering them....I'm not planning to use it right away.

I didn't get any "out of stock" notification yet....maybe I still will.
 
Denso O2 sensors. Toyota cats. Expensive, but your computer will get pissed off with anything else. Magnaflow cats will work for about a year or two before they piss off the computer, and are a cheaper altrernative.
 
Like some ppl before suggested, get the correct DENSO O2 sensors. I did mine and I haven't had a problem. Looks like the Rear (down stream) sensor was the original and taking off the nut from the stud was an effort in itself. Got to the URD website, here's the link: Oxygen / AFR Sensors - Underdog Racing Development
Find the correct part number for the REAR (DOWN STREAM SENSOR) according to your year and trim. Mine was a 1999 V6 Auto cali emission 4wd so part #234-4153 was the one for me. With the P0420 code, you should check for exhaust leaks, your MAF (mass air flow sensor) and then the O2 sensors and then finally the cats. If you had other codes with the P0420, it would probably lead you to the front O2 sensor. But if you only have the P0420, then it is more then likely the rear O2 sensor. I would personally try the Denso before you have to spend $$$$ on a cat.

OH! And look on amazon for the Denso O2 sensor with correct part number. They have the cheapest prices by far. Good luck!

Edit: Also check Rockauto.com for some good prices!

my mass air is only year old and that has nothing to do with po420 code, and i dont wanna just start buying o2 sensors esp after i just spent almost 300 bucks on both front and rear o2's, i wanna know who is running the urd sim with cali emissions to know if they work.... the guy said it will work but really wana know befor i buy one.......thanks
