Turning the key on my "98 4 runner & nothing happens- shut off & retry & it then starts. It's been very sporadic & always started on the first retry- it's getting more frequent & may now take a second & third try to start. Any thoughts. TIA

Woah! Just made a thread about this like 4 days ago. Haven't the same exact problems and it's been happening all week!

Question for all you guys out there who know about starters and contact removal- What's it cost to get this repaired roughly? It's too cold to get out and work in my garage at the moment and I don't have all the tools needed cause I'm away at school. Any estimates on what a shop would charge to take care of this for me?

Here are the part numbers...
28235-54380 Plunger magnet switch
28226-54340 Kit starter repair
28226-72010 Starter kit

The parts are about $40 from a discount online OEM outfit like https://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/oempartscat.html

The OE starter is well worth keeping as you can typically get three sets of contacts to a set of brushes.
I would estimate a shop is going to charge you a hour or a hour and a half to replace them. If they don't try to sell you a new starter.

I think I'm having this problem with my 96 limited. It used to take one re-try, now it won't start at all. The battery was weak so that got replaced as of yesterday. I'm going to swing by the dealership today to grab the parts.
