NYT ran an article today on the 4Runner. Not an awesome read, but not a Toyota bash fest that the news has been lately; though they do take their shots.

The ride sucks on highways? "kryptonite"?

The following paragraph in the Times article is somewhat bothersome :

"The vehicle’s Kryptonite is actually the highway, where you are unlikely to forget that the 4Runner is essentially a truck. On poorly maintained concrete roads the ride can get bouncy, and the chassis shivers on the worst expansion joints."

Do you guys find that to be true? Is the ride on a routine highway that terrible? My situation is I'm thinking of purchasing the 2010 Limited and I am a little worried about the daily ride (not the off road use-which I need intermittently). I test drove it but didn't manage to get on any highways to see if this "kryptonite" comment is true.

90 mile round trip on highway everyday, I've got no complaints, other than sh itty seat.

Writing for the NYT's, my bet would be the writer hangs at Starbucks, wears metro glasses, drives a Suburu, and drove up the Palisades Parkway 40 miles outside of the city one time....that would naturally qualify him/her or both, to make an educated assesment of the Off Road King.

You couldn't possibly expect them to say it was perfect...right?:naughty:

Not yet...Im waiting to get a full year in before the belly aching starts...I don't want to be unfair or unreasonable, unless it's something totally off the hook. I think Toyota has their hands pretty full right now.

I'll wait till I have a few things and then BLAST them...lol

It's a body-on-frame truck with a heavy solid rear axle. It rides pretty good, for a body-on-frame SUV. But you won't mistake it for anything other than a body-on-frame SUV. And if the expansion joints of a highway are bad, and you are going at just the right speed, you'll feel it.

It doesn't ride like a car. But it doesn't ride as bad as an empty pickup either. I think the NY Times reporter was being a bit over the top there, and essentially comparing it to cross overs and cars. It isn't a cross over and will never ride like one. It rides about as well as can be expected for an SUV with good offroad capability. Whether you'll like the ride is something you'll have to decide.
