Meet my SR5 22r 4Runner.
I bought it early 2014, it is my second 4Runner.
I had a 1992 2.8 deisel SR for 10 great years and after 100,000km sold it at 300000 km as I wanted an 80 series Landcruiser which was vey nice, but too expensive to run - should have kept the 4Runner.
My parents bought it in 1990 when they were first introduced in NZ, the local dealer was really keen to sell it as it was the first on sold in our town.
My Dad bought this one and a freind of his bought a V6 when they arrived not too long after.
Dad kept it for about 240,000km with the Toyota dealer servicing it, he then sold it to my brother who used it as a horse float tow vehicle and farm hack, so when I got it about 8 years later it was very tired and filthy.
So over the last 2 years and 25000km this is what ive done.
After a week of evenings cleaning inside and out the car was fairly presentable but running badly.
The original Toyota washable air filter was thrown out probably 200,000km late and replaced with a standard filter, now she could breathe and the difference was noticable, new plug leads, cap, rotor and a nervous morning swapping the plugs later ( they hadnt been changed for years and were very hard to remove, lots of crc and turning them a bit then back again to clear the threads worked) and she was starting to run well.
New shocks were vital as the originals were still there and well past their best, I bought a set of online autoparts in Australia which was much cheaper than buying in NZ.
The diff had a whine so that was rebuilt with the Lsd tightened up for better traction.
The front seats were worn out, so I got a set of front seats from an SSR-X, much more comfortable with sheepskin covers.
I failed an inspection due to a hole in the muffler so a nice big free flowing muffler and removal of the catalyst made it better, I need to replace the rear pipe with something larger as it now whistles under hard acceleration.
The transfer box was whining like crazy so after putting free wheel hubs to carry on driving it for a while I put in another box.
Ive been chasing a number of vibrations so after rear wheel balancing, new driveshaft UJs, driveshaft balance, gearbox mount tonight I fitted new rear springs and the vibration is gone, it was so nice to drive without the feeling that the driveshaft wanted to tear something off.
Ive been driving this car since I was 19 ( now 45) and its nice to have Dads old car and keep improving it.
Ill have this one for years.
