OBDII data vs. trip computer

Does anyone know if the data from the OBD port is the same as the data used by the trip computer to calculate mileage, distance, average speed etc.?

Because the trip computer is off-target, I question where it gets its fuel consumption data. I've seen other posts about it using a fuel injector, but I don't buy that. I think it's using the fuel gauge.

If there's good detail coming out of the OBD II port, then something like a ScanGauge II should be able to get better results. I don't know if that data is available, though. Good question!

That's exactly why I'm curious.... the trip computer is clearly not very accurate and I assume any OBD monitors would be better, but who knows?!
