Hey guys I want to order the bluetooth OBD2 scanner BAFX version

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

Do you have to have the extension dongle or can you plug the device straight to the port and leave it there? (2008 4runner) Will it interfere with knees on a 6ft tall driver?

For now, I plan to use this while driving and one of two Android tablets I have, both Samsung, either the 7" or the big 12", not sure yet.

Longer term goal is get a cheap, phone size non-current Samsung Galaxy tablet to use as a tiny tablet for various non-talk situations. Like dashcams (CaroO Pro) which some apps integrate the scan data as well. This app supports background camera use, IOS doesn't allow this.

Lastly, before I buy a small non-current Galaxy phone, I wonder if my 7" tablet is ok for dashboard/dashcam/gps google map use etc? Anyone running anything that large up front?

Thanks!

That dongle does look kind of long. The one I have is only about an inch long not counting the connector and it is 10% up under the dash. But that one I'm not sure. Use a ruler and see how far down it's going to stick I guess...

Here is how I mounted my 7 inch tablet. Seems like the perfect size:

BTW if you haven't ordered yet, I got this one:
http://www.amazon.com/ScanTool-4272...im_263_10?ie=UTF8&refRID=02TVA0SXPR3K2YMMHMJM

More expensive but a really solid product and no need for an extension cable. (5th gen anyway)

Thanks Warthog... I read up on that Exogear.

Upon more recon that I found re using phone and tablets as a dashcam, think I'm going to stay with my dedicated little China cam. It's out of the way, turns on/off automatically, and dedicated to dashcamming only. It was only $17 too.

Seems the phones and tabs sometimes get overloaded trying to do constant longterm video.

Ok, done with that idea.. money saved and grief avoided ! Thanks!

I have the BAFX adapter and it's fine. Doesn't protrude past the dash trim on my 07. I generally leave it plugged in 24/7 but sometimes I have to pull it out/pop it back in for Torque to connect to it. I'm also 6'1" and have yet to pop it with my knee.

Thanks Drunner.... I went ahead and ordered that BAFX, I still like this idea of realtime monitoring and getting better info other than idiot lights while pulling trailers, campers, boats, etc. I'm an active driver and usually pay close attention to driving habits, and try to help my vehicle. I'm just that way, LOL.
