OBD II adapter / Torque app - trans temp

I've seen others mention being able to read transmission temps on the later 3rd gen 4Rs. On mine (2002 Limited), the list of available readings doesn't include trans temp.

This is my adapter; I use the Torque app on Android.

What am I missing?

Where did you see others mentioning being able to read tranny temps? I have a 99 and I certainly don't have the option of tranny temps with Torque, but I'd be curious to know if maybe the ones that are reading it set up a custom PID for it?

Well would you look at that, sounds like he did get the transmission temp to read. I have the Scantool OBDLink adapter, but mine (it's a 99) might not be new enough to have that PID available. I do wonder why OPs isn't picking it up as a possibility though.

Edit: Oh, and I have a manual, so that definitely could be it as well haha.

Double edit: OP, do you have the paid version of Torque, or the free version?

I have the paid version of Torque, Torque Pro. I can read the trans temps on my 99 with no problems. I do have a late model 99. Wonder if that's the difference.
 
I see this on the Torque Lite (the free one) description:

The paid version has more features (HorsePower,Torque, 0-60 , quarter mile tests, graph data, map / track views) + no adverts and exra dial/display types! and better ABS / Knock sensor support, Transmission temperature support for some makes of car / trucks (GM / Ford, etc), and Turbo Boost on many more vehicles (including VW)

OP, if you have the Lite version, upgrade to the Pro and see if it works for you.
 
I'm wondering what (if any) diagnostics would be returned from a '97 KZN 185 3.0L TD Surf - I can't remember reading any info about this on UK Hilux Surf forums.

Paid. I've got one of those cheap China modules, so maybe it's not 100%. TFT isn't a requirement, since I'm not towing, and it still would be nice to have.
 
Anybody using the newest version of Scan Tool (427201 OBDLink LX)? From what I've gathered in the various threads it is worthwhile maybe spending of bit more for this scan tool ($70 on Amazon) versus some of the cheaper alternatives?

My intention would be to pair it with Torque Pro.

Lastly, will a technophobe (me) be able to work this menagerie with all your talk of PIDs and programming codes etc?

I am sometimes challenged by the surround sound and tv remotes.:shrug:
 
I have the latest scantool OBDLink LX and have been using it with Torque.

You have to be using the paid for app so that you can add your own custom sensors to get the trans temp to work.

Also, the sensor IDs and data channels are different for different gens. But I got the data on how to set it up for my 2014 from a post in the forums here. Search for "Torque Trans Temps" here and see if there is a post about your year/generation of truck.

It wasn't too hard to do, but it was a little tweaky.. :) Have to be careful of entering the custom sensor equation correctly :D

I wouldn't imagine it would be any better to get a more expensive bluetooth OBD reader over the cheaper ones. The application that reads the data is where the magic is. I leave my chinese version (about $13) plugged in all the time, works great. Unfortunately for me, they added the trans temp sensor in 99. Up until then it was just a dummy light sensor. i.e. when it gets too hot the light come on in the instrument panel, no resistive sensor.

As far as the settings in the app, it's very easy to set up. I found the settings for the trans temp sensors in our trucks at one point but I don't have a link. I'm sure a quick search would bring it up.

Wooden,

I was able to add a Trans temp gauge with Torque Pro (and I have a 1997) -- but I'm doubting the accuracy now -- It always matches the coolant temp.... and that doesn't seem right. I.e. if it jumps from 190 to 195, both are always identical.

So, one of the 2 seems wrong, and I'm betting it's the trans temp.

works perfectly with torque pro on my '99, and was only about $12. you have to use trans temp type 2 I believe from the list of monitors. pretty sure only '99+ are able to read trans temps.

I know jackall about A/T's, but I do know there is a heat exchanger (aka the stock trans fluid cooler) between the two, so unless the trans is generating ferocious heat, the trans fluid will tend to the same temp as the coolant, which is a much larger system, thermally speaking.
 
Resurrecting this thread. I have an OBD2 ELM327 scanner which I use with the Torque Lite app. However when I connect it to my 97 SR5, I dont see any option of adding a Transmission Fluid gauge. Where do you guys find it? Is it only in the pro version of the app or is there a custom PID?

Sorry man, you're out of luck there. Only the '99+ models report trans temp to the OBD2 port.
 
I have the Torque Pro for iPhone...anyone figure tranny temp for it?

Edit: Nevermind...just looked at [MENTION=70922]Robb235[/MENTION] 's post on it.
