Obnoxious trasnmission behavior(or normal)?

I to have been experiencing the tranny timing shifts. I am assuming that it is in conjunction with the ECO mode that is built into the system. Also is there any way to to disable that ECO mode?

Not sure what you mean by "tranny timing shifts," but there is no ECO driving mode. There is only an ECO lamp which comes on whenever you don't have your foot buried in the throttle.

To disable the ECO lamp: with the engine on and the vehicle stopped, push the "DISP" button on the right side of the steering wheel until you reach the "Settings" page. Scroll down to "ECO LAMP" and hit the "DISP" button to select "OFF."

My '10 FJ and 2016 T4R both do this. CC is ONLY for flat and constant freeway travel. Transmission seems to be a little more in the correct range on the FJ and seems to shift more where I'd expect, but I don't know if it's programmed any different. I know Toyota says it was programmed for hill driving etc. May just be that it is lighter and has big tires on it. That "Huh? Oh! Let's go" hesitation in 1st gear we get sometimes is annoying as hell and seems to be fairly normal across the board with this motor and trans. I guess Toyota is still figuring out the throttle by wire thing.

By "hesitation in 1st gear" do you find that to be intermittent? Most of the time my 2016 seems to accelerate like normal even though it is sluggish overall. However, intermittently I will accelerate and it feels like it is a complete dog as if it is trying to start off from a stop in second gear. It won't get out of its own way and I'm thinking to myself "there is definitely something wrong with this".

Again this is intermittent and does not happen every time. I was considering taking it into the dealer to address this but I am pretty certain they will not duplicate it and claim it is normal. I've been holding off on doing many of the mods that I have parts for because I don't want them to blame it on my modifications.... If this is something that many/most are experiencing I would feel much better about not taking it to the dealer and accepting it as normal. Then I can move ahead with my upgrades!

I also have scenario #1, and like many it seems to be a new or "learned" behavior. I'm supercharged and have slightly upsized my tires, perhaps this began or at least I noticed this more after the change to the larger tires. Very annoying behavior to say the least.

Mine has never done this and I drive the mountains a lot. As a matter of fact, I think it upshifts back into 5th too easily which basically is a reminder for me to switch to S4. Unless it’s just a small hill, I’ll use S mode 95% of the time in the mtns. Mostly to avoid the downshift that occurs when med to hard braking on downhills.
Edit: 45 mph is pretty slow, why would you want to be in 5th going uphill at 45? I cruise comfortably in 4th to about 65 on moderate grades.

I have a 2012 limited 4runner, I have those same issues to a point but my main concern is the delayed engagement when shifting either from park to drive or reverse to drive. It does it randomly some time I can go a week without any issues and other times it can happen 6 or 7 times in a day. I took my 4runner into the dealer earlier this week and they had a code reader on it as the delay was actually happening, only to have the code reader to say everything was fine. The Toyota dealer ultimately suggested that I get a new transmission, with their reasoning being there was something wrong and they didn't know what it was. I made an appointment with a transmission specialist for next Saturday, to actually check the fluid and make sure there was debris from the gearing, but they said they've seen a few 5th gens with the same problems and all of them have resulted in needing a new transmission.

I will update once the specialist has a look at the transmission, but if anyone else has any more information on this that would be helpful.
