Occupy Wall Street

"if you exchange liberty for security then you deserve neither security or liberty"

And one more thing

"know thy enemy" did you ask yourself who the enemy really is??

Don't let them tell you who to vote for, what to eat, what music to listen too, which pill to shove down your wind pipe, what to buy...start by using your own head.

"If a man is unable to think for himself, then he is not a man"

End of rant

... but what else are they to do since they have no more money for weed???

we had protesters about 3 months ago regarding the bailout money... trouble is the bailout money was paid off over a year ago. get a clue you useless hippies!

Dodd, Frank and Durbin are the the ones who should be voted out as they propagate this nonsense

I'm really sad how unintelligent you people are who discount this occupy wall street movement and think the is a bunch of hippies!! I support this 100% and hope this grows.

Seriously? Hippies? More people smoke than you probably realize. Not just hippies.

You know what. Im not saying i support these people, But i feel that a lot of Americans are getting tired of the BS going on in out government. Its crazy. WE PAYY THESE idiots to make decisions for us! The government doesnt belong in my everyday life. Tax payers dont need to pick up the slack for irresponsible corporations. Its CAPITALISM. I dont care if the bailouts were paid back with interest. Its the point that OUR government has gone far enough to do these things. I can understand their frustration.

then again i'm a Libertarian so who cares what I think.

Just think.... any new law limits your possible freedoms. That is unless its a law limiting out goverment. And those dont come around anymore

The majority of the protesters want MORE government, and they want corporations to be more regulated. Their frustration is built on a foundation of misunderstanding. More regulation can make it more difficult to do business thus making it more expensive for the populace.

There will always be a need to balance government and capitalism. Take the auto industry for example. If there were not governmental safety standards, we'd be driving in beer cans with wheels. But if the industry becomes over regulated and car manufacturers have to build cars like tanks, the expense is passed on to the consumer.

In reality, consider the Durbin amendment. This was supposed to alleviate some stress on the merchant, but it has ended up costing lost revenue for corporations, increased fees for consumers and increased costs for small businesses - the very people the law was designed to help - it ended up hurting.

At this time it seems many want to see capitalism fail. Have fun waiting in line for toilet paper.

Don't get me wrong I support their right to protest and free speech.

Much like it's my right and free speech to poke fun at these anti-corporate twunts with their iphones and sony cams.

Everyone should stop citing youtube clips with random hippies. Sure there are plenty of Vegan touting, Yoga in the streets protestors out there but they are the first ones highlighted by the media and do not represent the movement no more than seeing a video of a cop beating someone actually means all cops beat innocent civilians.

I am surprised that the Tea Party 'rs are not joining them. This was what the Tea Party was all about in the beginning correct? Now the TP movement seems concerned about traditional Republican issues like immigration and abortion but it STARTED OUT with anger at the banks. The banks that practically brought this county's economy to a standstill.

The subprime mortage crisis was created by the banks and our lack of banking regulation. Particularly the repealing of Glass Steigal, which would have prevented traditional banking institutions like Citibank from speculating with your savings deposits.

Does anyone remember when these institutions FAILED? Remember that WE the taxpayers bailed out the banks that were affect by those failures
=> socialization of private enterprise for private profits.

  • AIG
  • Lehman Brothers
  • Bear Sterns
  • Washington Mutual
  • Countywide Financial
  • Merrill Lynch

Those are just the institutions that failed. There were so many others that would have failed but were saved* by the US government.

******* OWS ******

The OWS movement is about people being outraged at a system that has resulted in 20 years of stagnated wages while the rich have gotten richer. Wages have stayed flat while people have been led to believe they can live the middle class lifestyle because of easy access to credit. All the while, healthcare costs have increased drastically leaving the average worker will less disposable income than he had 10 years ago in the same job.

Over the last 20 years America's overall GDP has increased and wealth among the top has grown even more drastically. Yet 40% of Americans have ZERO wealth, ZERO. Despite this, we are the richest nation in the world. Often citizens confuse income and wealth - don't do that. Income and wealth are very different, wealth is distributed in stocks, bonds, property. I think the average American does not realize just how rich, "rich" is these days.

*** Capitalism is not going anywhere but it can be regulated and progressively taxed ***

I don't think capitalism is going away but perhaps we need to stop rescuing banks and start investing in our kids futures.

I don't want to live in a future where there are no public school systems and the top 1% control everything. It is bad enough right now where the 20% control 84% of the wealth and just 400 families have more wealth than 150 million Americans.

If you want to do some research look up "wealth distribution America" in the google.

Who Rules America: Wealth, Income, and Power

The data is not hard to find but it never mentioned on TV because everyone on TV is rich and their sponsors are rich.

[Orignal full version] 1 Marine vs. 30 Cops (By. J. handy) - YouTube

Comments by the uploader:
"United States Marine Corps. Sgt. Shamar Thomas from Roosevelt, NY went toe to toe with the New York Police Department. An activist in the Occupy Wall Street movement, Thomas voiced his opinions of the NYPD police brutality that had and has been plaguing the #OWS movement.

Thomas comes from a long line of people who sacrifice for their country: Mother, Army Veteran (Iraq), Step father, Army, active duty (Afghanistan), Grand father, Air Force veteran (Vietnam), Great Grand Father Navy veteran (World War II)."

Top-Comment:
"Of course he knows the cops are US citizens, that is why he is asking them why they are hurting US citizens as well. He went to Iraq to protect and save the US citizens back home from attacks (at least that's what the government wants it said) then he goes home to see the people he is protecting from the bad guys outside are the same people the POLICE is beating.

STFU! If you're having a hard time understanding what the man said, go back to school and stop playing with yourself."

These losers have been "occupying" Downtown Binghamton as well, thats all they are if you look at any of them (they look like someone out of the "sex pistols" without any of the fame). My friends got a bit drunk last weekend and told them off, i laughed, i drank enough to notice that 3 of us vs. them wouldn't end well.

After seeing many pictures on the internet i saw people saying that they couldn't find jobs after years of searching, and i couldn't help but notice that when i went into target to see if they had any cool new matchbox 4runners or defenders i noticed a sign that said they were hiring (pic below). I also noticed that McDonalds and Walmart were hiring as well.

My caption:
To the 99% who say they can't find a job, I walked into target and found this, i literally got out of my car and saw this, it didn't take me 7 seven of college and masters degree to see this, but apperently some people with those credentials can't even find this.

The public bus goes to this target and stops in many places, i have taken this bus dozens of times, and it also goes to walmart and McDonalds, so transportation shouldn't be an issue.

I just thought this was worth repeating. In case anyone missed it.

Well said. you summed it up very well.

^Got to be the most ignorant post in this thread.

well since I posted above things have changed,
at least @ OWS in NY. I only know what i have been reading and I have listened to several interviews on youTube. As I understand it the protests are becoming flooded with homeless people who figured out there is a lot of free stuff there. Also in Oakland, some anarchists have damaged businesses and storefronts by doing a "black-block" style campaign during the otherwise peaceful protest.

What is the movement about?

I think the main point, which can be gathered just from the name alone is that Wall Street has corrupted our government. They have bought our politicians and the democratic process. Obama does not work for the people, his campaign donations come from these big corporations. The same can be said about ALL the republicans. People are angry and it is only going to get worse when unemployment isn't rewed by the new* house.

**** Market Failures ****
Above I listed many companies that failed. We bailed them out and they took our money. That is socialism for corporations.

Have you heard of MF Global? They are a US hedge fund that just went under last Monday. At the time of their collapse they had issued a debt to asset ratio of 40:1. This means that for every 1 dollar of assets, they leant out 40. This type of crazy gambling is accepted by WS and the politicians. And to date they have only arrested 1 executive for fraud. Just 1, wtf?

Target ...
Well don't think the 8.7 Million Americans who lost their jobs since 2008 can all work at Target. As for the members on this forum, well I hope you are majoring in science, medical, or engineering. Otherwise you very well might be working at Target for $8.50 / hr when you graduate.

As for myself, I am a pretty conservative guy. I served in the military, and agree with a lot of conservative principles. But times have changed and I don't think that socialism for corporations is something William F Buckley would have supported.
:hatsoff:

Yeah well the Occupy protest have been the cause a ton of problems here in Victoria and Vancouver BC. Most of the original protesters have packed up their tents and left but now we have druggies and criminals taking over the tent city here and Vancouver. Friday there was an OD took the first responders forever to find the person. Then yesterday another OD this one died..the public bathrooms in the square where they are have been toilets in the bathrooms were destroyed and all the needle drop boxes in the area are overflowing.
