This sounds like the issue, but I'm not sure. 265/70 17's are the standard size on SR5's and trails (At least that's what mine had).
I'm not sure, but would the speedometer still be accurate going from 20" down to 17"?
Have you tested the distance & speed with a GPS?
The difference between OEM limited 20's 245/65/20s is less than .01% larger than the 265/70/17. I'm gonna have to say it but I think you might need to adjust your driving behavior. As a forum member once said, drive like you got an egg between your foot and the accelerator pedal. It sucks because the 4runner is a such a slug.

I would have never guessed it was so close.
I read this thread and decided to try out 91 (i'm at altitude so our base is 85). The difference in price is staggering though - it's between $.55 and $.70 at every station I've come across.
At a minimum that's $13 extra every tank. That adds up.
What happened to the times when it was a $.10 difference between each grade?

Gas prices increase over time. It's almost as inevitable as death and taxes. What I don't understand is why the gap between the grades has increased so much. Kind of a rhetorical question unless someone has the truth.

you have the truth, or at least mention it. gas is heavily taxed and taxes are levied as a percentage, so the more a gallon of gas is the higher the tax so the relationship is relative, the higher gas prices the greater the spread between regular mid and premium fuel. additionally this accounts for the cost difference state to state, different states apply their own local taxes. think CT, NY and NJ... so that's what happened and it is the truth. as you said, death and TAXES
I understand that but taxes do not explain the exponential increase completely.

2.00 tank of 85 would be 2.40 after taxes
2.20 tank of 91 would be 2.64 after taxes
more, yes but not .70 more something has to be happening before taxes.

you aren't looking at the relationship correctly. let me see if I can help. when regular gas was a dollar a gallon mid grade was about 1.10 and premium say 1.22 so now the price of a gallon of gas has gone up correct? it's not a dollar for regular anymore so now a 2.00 gallon of regular 2.25 for mid and 2.40 for premium? the relationship is the same or more accurately today 3.00 for regular 3.33 for mid and 3.70 for premium so when you are remembering a .10 spread between fuel grades it's probably because you're remembering the late 1990's it isn't just taxes, it's also inflation, the cost of fuel has gone up, but the relationship as a percentage is in line and that is largely because of the way fuel is taxed.

More grist for the mill. Until recently I had a 23 Tacoma. Obviously a different engine that what is in the T4R; but the vvti function is very much the same. My Tacoma had a manual transmission, and I could feel how smoothly the engine was running through the shift lever. I discovered early on that the truck seemed to prefer running on premium gas over the 87 octane regular. Did it matter? Certainly not enough to make running premium a cost saving proposition. But I liked how the engine purred on the higher octane fuel so that is what I fed her.
All grades of Top Tier Gas, which is recommended by Toyota, have all the additives you need, especially cleaners.
Cleaners and anti-friction/wear additives are different and not all top tier fuels have the same levels of this. It's an interesting rabbit hole to go down.
