Octanejunkie's T4R project - 99 SR5 4WD 5-speed

I don't know about a dick punch [emoji13] but I was expecting it to be more difficult based on your post. The filter I took off had a Toyota sticker on it dated 92, so I suspect it was the original filter.

I drained all the fuel out of the filter, and caught all of the fuel that dripped down when I opened the lines and poured it back into the tank. I figure I saved about $5 worth of expense in time and gas right there [emoji56][emoji1787]

I'll cut the filter open in a couple of days to reveal what secrets lurk within.

Also, after some thought, all the stickers have 92 written on them. So I don't think that's the date code for your filter. Not sure what it represents though.

I don't track inventory on the joint, and they're never sold out. Just make sure you have the correct information in dropdown.

Mike
Apologies, Mike

It was a combination of both forged and heim parts selected that triggered a "sold out" status. Deselecting one resolved the issue.

Weekend update 251,721

Broke my rear diff and replaced it.

It started making a ticking noise every 4th or 5th revolution under load, not coast, 2-3 week ago. That got progressively worse until it ticked with every revolution, getting progressively worse until it fractured.

Based on the progression I keep it was coming so I took it easy until it failed and stayed close to home. The failure happened within 5-10 miles of me first noticing the noise.

Based on the initial intermittency of the noise, and it's progression, I believe a pinion bearing failure led to this

Once I diagnosed it with a mechanic's stethoscope (20" 3/8 socket extension to the ear) I ordered a replacement from ECGS, it arrived mid-last week.

I called a tow truck to take me to my buddy's house so I could change the diff. I can't do things as involved as that at my apartment. AAA easy.

Driving it up the ramp was sad.

Once I got it off the truck I drained the diff, not much debris came out nor was much on the magnet. Once I pulled the 3rd member I found several 2-3" sections of the pinion gear teeth at the bottom of the housing, debris of varying size. Many of the smaller pieces were ring gear chunks.

I mopped and rinsed the entire housing, even removing the inner splash guards and flushed them with brake cleaner.

I did the same with the housing and replaced the gasket

Install was pretty easy and the opposite of removal. Torqued everything to spec and filled the diff with Lucas 85W 140. The whole exercise took 6 hours.

Broke the gears in with 4 successive drives between 15-20 miles each, letting the diff cool in (completely) between drives.

First drive was 15.1 miles city / suburbs, 30-40 mph max. Second drive was 18.3 city / hwy, 60-70 mph max. Next two drives averaged 14-15 miles each and were basically the same as the second - all 4 drives totaled 63.7 miles; ending mileage 251,785

Rear 4xi bumper and swingarm mounted, need to wire up license plate lights.
[pic pending]

Took the truck out for a light trail run/ shakedown with over 100 miles on new rear diff after proper gear break-in.

Rowher 4x4 trail, rated most difficult, was a breeze

I did the trail in reverse, starting with 6N08 from the reservoir off Bouquet Canyon Road. I took it easy on the uphills and favored 4Lo in the technical sections and pretty much 2Hi everywhere else, the truck did great and I never needed the rear locker.

I followed a SAS'd second gen and a Jeep down the front side, they were on their brakes the entire time. I was in 4Lo and had to gas it down the hill to keep it moving, lol, I love a 5-speed.

Also, cleared everything with ease. Very happy with the current build.

Pilot Rock Truck Trail on Saturday
Started at Cedar Springs Day Use area off dead-end Hwy 173 from 138. Aired down to 15 psi in the parking lot and began the run on 2N33 then took first off-chute to 2N17X, going up. I passed several groups coming down. I was able to do most technical climbs in 2nd gear 4Lo, a few needed 1st gear. Never used my rear locker but my front diff is Spartan locked.

There is no exiting 2N17X until it meets back up with 2N33, pic below is just below that junction.

From there I made a left and went to the junction of 2N34 until I got to 2N37 and since I didn't want to go up to Twin Peaks/Arrowhead I took 2N37 towards Miller Canyon. Lots of standing water on this route to splash or avoid.

I made a right on 2N36 which also had some nice little technical sections and a few off-chutes until I got back to 2N33, which I took back down to where I entered the trail. Several more technical off-chutes to finish up the day, and with the driver out and back, a little over 200 miles.

Stopped in at Lowe's in Rancho Cucamonga to pick up one of these

Installed light bars on Sunday

Front

37 inch Led Light Bar 180W Single Row LED Light Bar Driving Light CREE LEDs 6D Lamp https://a.co/d/a79FNNn

With minor modification it bolted right up to my fairing mounts and it's low enough to clear the pipes in my garage when the truck is loaded (me in it)

Rear

Rigidhorse 32 Inch LED Light Bar Single Row Flood & Spot Beam Combo 30000LM Off Road LED Light Bar https://a.co/d/41M5PdB

I originally bought the 32" for the front but it was too narrow, so it went in the back. All lights will be controlled with this Auxpower 6 Gang Switch Panel https://a.co/d/4gSiDRt

I've got a few more goodies planned but next up is a diff fluid swap front and rear, so I made a little differential fluid weed sprayer pump to make things easier.

Excited to hear your thoughts on the aux switch panel. I’ve been waiting to pull the trigger on it. Price is good, seems too good though lol, and a couple of spotty reviews. Enjoying the build thread as well.

Thanks for the kind words

I just started test fitting and getting everything ready for install and will be documenting all efforts

Pretty sure the relay box will be mounted above the booster, and the penetration to into the cab will be next to it the booster.

I will keep this thread updated

Weekend update 252,302

540-ish miles since the new diff install, so I drained and filled both diffs with Lucas 85W 140 using the differential fluid "sprayer" I built. Worked like a charm and was pretty effortless. See you in 30K miles.

Rotated tires for the heck of it. I do so about every 2-3 wheeling trips.

Got a used 255/870 R17 ST MAXX off a local buddy and had it mounted and balanced, then installed on the truck. Ordered a 4' cable lock and a pair of padlocks keyed alike for securing the tire and hi-lift jack. Waiting on a few parts from 4Xi to update jerry can carrier. The rear bumper coming along nicely.

Replaced front bump stops, the energy suspension ones didn't hold on. The one on the driver side cracked and split completely.

Installed Durobump bump stops. I suspect these will last a bit longer.

Upgraded my Overland Custom Design front sway bar endlinks from squeaky, creaky heim joints to forged joints - the truck is now quiet again, lol

Started test fitting parts for lighting and electrical upgrades.

Making my way through this. The new truck is looking great.

I am curious what paint brand and color you used for the wheels? I am going to reprint mine sometime in the next 3 months.
