October Camping Trip #5- THE COVE!!!

Due to work travel I won't be able to smoke pork shoulders for Friday nights dinner, sorry folks.

I'll be heading up early Friday with my ATV in tow and I plan on doing some trail scouting so I can get a feel for the current conditions and get some map tracks to overlay HemaExplorer.

Who else will be there Friday morning?

Sra. Nuñez and I may head that way a day early to explore VA. We might roll in Friday morning to set up camp.
 
I intend to leave Friday around 11:00am which should put me there around 1:30pm - 2:00pm.

I don't have a built-in CB but do have two handheld Motorola's.

I have never been to the Cove so I have no idea what the trails are like.

I don't mind leading but it would be a bad case of the blind leading the blind. Or lots of stopping and walking the trail ahead. If I can meet up with anyone on Friday to scout out the trails that would help.

Maplets has a map for the Cove, I don't know how accurate it is but at first glance it looks similar to the print out picture.

Hey everyone- I'm starting to get everything organized here!

We have 2 volunteers thanks Sleeter and OneGreenTaco) so far for trail guides, it would be nice to get 3 or 4 more. Anyone?

On another note-

Since Scott and the folks at GTPeace will be providing us with a cookout Saturday night (remember to bring something) and we will all be gathered together, I want to have the...

First Annual Cove Pumpkin Carving Contest

One prize (a nice one!) has already been donated by OneGreenTaco. If we can have more donations, we will have more winners- 1st -3rd, scariest, funniest, etc. Depends on the prizes.

RULES:

*Bring your own pumpkin!

*Only 1 pumpkin per vehicle (We can't judge 100 pumpkins, lol)

*No offensive carvings (kids will be there!)

*Judges will be independent and appointed. Maybe The Cove Staff will judge and they can join in our cookout...

*Nothing can be used except for the pumpkin. No toothpicks, decorations, paint or anything else. You can use a candle or light inside, obviously.

*No Pre-carved pumpkins! We will all carve together at the same time.

*It would be a good idea to bring a pre-cleaned-ready to carve pumpkin.

*No bribing the judges (you know someone will try, lol)



*Carving starts at 6:30pm judging at 8:30pm

Recent intel

Hey everybody,

Maryland forum member and long-time Cove-goer here.

I've been jealously stalking this thread since [MENTION=65614]Antman[/MENTION] fired it up.

As timing had it, I was already scheduled to be there for a family trip yesterday and today, which keeps me from getting out to meet everybody next weekend. Figured I'd share a couple of things as a heads-up regardless and will start counting the days to next year's meet-up.


  • <b>Camp 2:</b>
    For people bringing kids, there's a "waterfall" that is fun as a point of interest for smaller kids in the corner at site 38. More importantly it's a constant source of white noise that will cover O-beer thirty noise (and 50-person shower noise) as the night winds on


  • <b>Camp 2 - Site 42:</b>
    Stayed here last night. When I dug out the fire pit, I found that it was full of nails and drywall screws - I'm talking like a bucket full. Found plenty of them around the campfire circle also, so if you end up with this site watch those tires (and bare feet/flip flops).


  • <b>Trail signs:</b>
    There's a trail sign about trail signs (you read that right). Right behind the check-in is a sign indicating that Big Dogs has posted trail signs, so hopefully that will help with navigation until you guys actually map some tracks. Pic below.


  • <b>Temperatures:</b>
    It was pretty windy this weekend, but even without the wind it would've been chilly. Was in the mid-thirties at 10pm and cooler as the night wore on. (Read as: Extra firewood... and beer)


  • <b>Cellphones:</b>
    Verizon coverage has been good for years, but as discussed earlier in the thread coverage has been spotty at best for other carriers. I'm happy to report that Tmobile (typically worst coverage out there) had LTE at Camp 2, on the overlook loop, and rifle range. Finally!


  • <b>GPS track / KMZ:</b>
    I mapped from Route 50, into The Cove, up to Camp 2, and around the Overlook loop and Rifle range (attached). Mostly adding this for new folks that haven't been there yet. Really looking forward to seeing the tracks that are captured over next weekend. Let me know if you need someone to stitch multiple tracks together. I'd be happy to do it and have wanted a comprehensive map of The Cove for a long time anyway. Note that the t4r.org forum software won't let me up load a .kmz so I had to add a .zip to the filename as a workaround. If you're trying to open this in Google Earth, Garmin Basecamp, etc, you'll have to rename the file to end with just .kmz (vs. .kmz.zip)... hopefully that makes sense

These guys are in trouble, lol. My Wife's family has a pumpkin carving contest every year- (53 years in a row now!) and I'm usually in the top 3.

The contest was tonight- I took the trophy home again! (Yes they have trophies and everything).

This is exactly what I've been wanting to do. Mark major obstacles and points, kinda rate the trails, and be able to get a good Google Earth and Garmin overlay. Trails were marked for sh!t last year. No clue what you was on or how bad it would get (or in some cases find out it's really a UTV trail and have to butter some big ol 4RNR hips to fit). I'm gonna do my best to save the tracklogs individually on my garmin...but I'll probably forget and it will end up a dew big logs. I'll definitely share any KMZ or KML file with ya.

As far as nails and screws, people love to burn pallets...but what doesn't burn is what holds them together. Common issue at public campsites unfortunately.

Hopefully the Big Dogs trail signs are up and will help tremendously.

Willis did mention that some signs were posted on the trails. From the way he said it, it didn't sound too earth shattering.

I mean, if we are on a trail called "dirt trail" all we know is that we are lost on "dirt trail". LOL

Sounds like some smart people on here are making progress with a map though.:usa2:

Yeah awesome. I'm with you. I'm subscribed to this thread, so will keep an eye out for tracks after you guys are back and merge them up if we have good data. Anything is better than what I have now.

As a heads-up, Hema is killer in Australia and I'm hoping it will be soon here too, but they haven't updated their North America (Hema Explorer) app since SEMA last year. If you're looking for a better supported app with more maps, etc. Gaia GPS is where it's at.

I hear you on the UTV thing too. Things get skinny pretty quickly out there.
