OD. vs. automatic second gear

ok, so i've tested both going up the hill. both giving you the boost at a higher RPM. now, is there a difference between these 2? anyone recommended more than the other?

I personally like the auto second gear. I think its much better than OD. For example i had 5 of my friends in the runner with me on day and we had to go up a big ass hill and i so i put it in OD and it helped a little but i was pretty close to flooring it. So i popped it into 2nd and off i went up the hill. Imo 2nd is the best.
 
yes downshifting is much better in slow speeds, your OD is like another gear past 3rd gear, so it goes, 1,2,3,OD. and if you are going 0-15 you should be in 1st. 15-35 (think) 2nd, and 35-45 (i think again) 3rd, and anything over 45 will be in OD, its just another gear, but not as big a gear as 1,2,3..... if i am wrong feel free to clear some of that up

Hehe well second gear can get up to 75 if your pushin it. haha i was curious one day on the highway. At about 5700 rpms if you keep it in 2nd you will hit 75. Even though thats not good for your vehicle. One time is ENOUGH. haha.
 
Yea ive only done that once maybe twice.. Its stupid really, good way to wreck and waste gas plus kill the engine and tranny.

Ha and can you believe this is coming from a 17 year old.
 
I did used to take my overdrive off while driving up a 12 mile road into the mountains. The engine would shift into over drive and kind of be caught in low rpm with low power. I would turn it off to keep the tranny from searching for the right gear and keep it revving higher and have better power. Then on the way down in bad weather I might also shift into 2 to slow the car without pedal braking. Just thought I'd add that.
 
And I believe if you guys are talking about starting with the O/D off or in 2, the O/D off will just mean you are limited to 3 gears (normal operation) and not the electronic overdrive. So you would start in first. If the transmission is in 2 it just locks it into 2 from the start. So your first try at the trip up the hill was actually in first, or maybe you needed to push the pedal down farther to downshift it into 1 or 2 and gain some torque.

I'm 17 too. I'm not going to go and do that with my 4runner though. Can't be breaking anything. :D
 
im 19 and the rig is jsut now starting to fall apart, i mean every thing seems to start breaking one thing at a time, but it never stops! sucks! just hope the engine and tranny holds!

That really stinks. It seems like you've done a lot of nice stuff to it.
 
That stuff doesn't seem to add up to $4,000, but maybe you have done stuff that isn't on that list.

Are your window vents in channel?
 
no, i also have another sub in a box that is just sitting in the garage with a 4 year warranty on it.... dont know what to do with it... yes it all is 4 grand the 1000 sound system makes up for it

you leave it 'ON' (but actually the light is 'off', you don't see it). saves you gas. normal RPM. you use it when you need 'a bit of power', on your instance, having auto., when you switch to '2' gear(going up on a hill let's say). this OD will give you some power, but not as much as the auto. '2' gear.

No. Overdrive lowers the RPM at which the gears shift so it basically saves you gas. Overdrive is nice if you need some extra power.
