Odd Navigation Questions...

So I just bought myself a very nice '05 SE w/a factory nav unit. Now I know that these w/nav were either unavailable or very rare to see from the factory so I think the PO installed it aftermarket but I'm not 100% sure. It has some wires ran and some stuff around the truck that makes me think it's not factory (see pics). Also, while the nav seems to work great there is no voice while driving to a destination, just the blue highlighted path. On the rear door it has a trim panel that has a spot for the rear view camera but there is nothing there and in place is a camera attached on the license plate and there is also a sensor or antenna attached to the rear drivers side window that says sirius on it (see pic).

Overall I'm really pumped to have it and it feels good to be back in a T4R but I would like to get this aspect sorted out. Can anyone give me insight or some info about this subject. Electronics are not my thing.

This may sound weird but are you 100% sure your car is an 05? If it is, than that was installed AFTER the car was manufactured, my guess is not at the port either.

The 05 nav(which I have in my car) is slightly different than yours(I don't have MP3-CD capability or the SAT/AUX button). I think the nav in your car is a "5th gen" nav, which they first started to offer in 06. When I say 5th gen, I'm referring to the nav gen, not the 4runner gen.

So if your car is an 05, you have a nav model that wasn't even offered in 05. My guess based on that and the various antennas is that someone retrofitted that nav into your car when they owned it. Considering they used a factory nav its very possible it was a car owned by someone on this forum or maybe one of the other toyota forums.

Factory navigation was not an option on the '05 4Runner Sport Edition, so that's definitely added on afterwards. I did the same exact thing on my '04 Sport Edition....bought a new Toyota navigation system and installed it myself in place of the original stereo headunit.

BTW, I put my navigation antenna in the factor location, which is actually above the navigation unit, under the dash. It still works perfectly...

Forgot to say--- the reason you don't have voice guidance is because the person who installed the navigation system failed to hook up the VSS (speed sensor) wire. Until you hook up that wire, there's no way you'll get voice guidance. You should also check to see if the reverse wire was hooked up too. The easiest way to do that is to put the 4Runner in reverse and back up a bit while watching the screen to see if the vehicle icon flips backwards while you're moving in reverse. If the icon doesn't flip, then the reverse wire is connected.

Truck is def an '05 (build date 3/05) but if it was a forum member that'd be great so I could get some insight into what's up...


Jed, since it looks like the VSS and possibly the reverse wire aren't hooked up what is the best way to go about doing that? Is it an intense process?

It's not difficult. You will have to remove the unit to access the pins on the back. Then you run a wire for VSS (and reverse if it's not already hooked up) from the back of the unit and splice them into the correct wires on your 4Runner. Fortunately, they are both in easy locations. One of them can be accessed in the wiring harness directly under the headunit and the other can be accessed in the passenger's side kick panel. I don't remember which one is which, but I believe the VSS is below the headunit and the reverse signal wire is in the passenger's side kick panel.

There are a few threads with specific instructions on how to locate the correct wires and give you the colors & exact location. I did mine a long time ago, so I don't remember the specifics.

Try OEMValue.com for help. They sell factory Toyota NAV units and have lots of tech help there. I installed a factory NAV in my Sequoia that I used to own with backup camera and voice. It was all plug and play though.

Try the website, you will surely find some help there on which wires to connect to. There are differences in units too based on whether you have JBL or not.

Well, at least you can do both at the same time. To answer your earlier question--I'm not sure which thread, but it's around here somewhere. I'll see if I can find the information for you when I have some time. I might even have printed out the information and saved it when I was doing my installation.

Next question is know where I can find the OEM rear camera? OEMvalue only had some suggestions and some other parts sites didn't list a camera but i wanna make this looks like factory since I already have the location.

I would think you would have to go back to Toyota or find it on one of the websites that sells Toyota parts. I personally went with an eclipse camera.

The OEM camera is made by Eclipse. Just look for the Eclipse BEC series back-up camera and it will be 100% plug-n-play and will look exactly the same as OEM. Sometimes you can find them on ebay for around $100

BTW, you can use any of the older models (105, 106, 108) without any problems.
