Odd noise coming from engine

'05 4runner - Starting to get this odd noise coming from the engine. It sounds like two thick sticks hitting together and it only happens when I accelerate. Its noticeable once I get about 20 - 25 mph and the sound gets faster as the speed increases. However taking my foot off the gas or braking stops the noise.

Put it into 4wd high, no difference in behavior.

I have not tried reverse (at a higher speed than 1 - 2 mph backing out of a spot) as I need a clear road to do that on and there's too much traffic here to do that.

Accelerating while cornering left or right (though I did this at around 20 mph as a test), still the same behavior.

If I roll down my window, the noise is diminished by the sound of the outside.

Any idea what it may be?

You sure this isn't the famous driveline "clunk" that's a feature of our 4th gen rear driveshaft?? Easy way to check is lubricate the slip yoke on your rear driveshaft and the u-joints. If it's gone or greatly diminished then you know where the problem is/was.

I give mine some attention at every oil change now and it helps quite a bit.

Looked up the driveline issue, that happens when you brake. Mine is during acceleration.

I haven't looked at my cv boots yet. If it was them, I would expect the noise to happen during coasting and braking.
 
Maybe, but during coasting and braking there's no load on the axle. Is the noise only during acceleration?

On my previous Chevrolet truck, that noise was a worn-out U joint in the rear driveshaft. Whip out your grease gun and hit all 3 zerks on the rear driveshaft {forward u-joint, rearward u-joint, slip joint} and repeat your test to see if the noise is affected.

Thanks for the info. Was going to do this after I left work, however the noise was much louder, to the point where someone 1 car ahead of he could hear it. I pulled over and checked my cv boots, the joints by hand, both universals. Only thing I could find was the front universal had a slight play in it, but nowhere enough that even my wife could hear it while I was on the phone with her.

Since I didn't trust taking it all the way back home and fiddling with it, I took it to the service station that I use on occasion. Whatever it is, its going to be beyond my capabilities in tools to take it apart and fix it.

The noise progressed from this morning of having to be very quiet and no radio or a/c on to hear it all the way to it drowning out the radio.

I'll keep you guys updated so if someone has this in the future, they at least can use it as a reference.
