Odd pedal feedback when off-roading

I took the 4Runner to the beach yesterday, and noticed it had odd pedal feedback on occasion.

This particularly happened when the center diff lock was not locked, and i was in 4Hi. I pointed the front tires straight up a sand dune, which was fairly steep, and when i applied the gas, the pedal had a bouncy feel, similar to when ABC kicks in on a skid and the pedal reverberates.

I locked he diff. and tried again, and i did the same thing. When i couldn't get all the way up, the pedal had the same reverberation.

Anyone know what causes this?

thats the wonderful traction control system taking over the throttle for you. you can search for "VTRAC off mod" to install a switch similiar to what comes in an FJ to turn it off. or you can unhook the ABS wheel speed sensor connector of one of the wheels. I usually disconnect the front driver tire as the connector under the hood right above the wheel well is easy to get to. Once you plug it back in everything comes back on and the dash lights go away. occasionally you may have to do a "zero point calibration" which is easily done with two jumper wires.
