Ode to my truck

The frame on my lifted is absolutely prestine as far as rust. The same cannot be said for the donor. Donor interior is smoked in... Plus, I have gone through my truck as far as pads/ calipers, front end, powers steering rack, alternator, starter... Not to mention the weld on bumper mounts and panhard bracket... it goes on and on. Plus, I have spent so much time wiring all my goodies up. I just can't commit to wiring it all over again. I honestly believe that the engine swap is the easiest.

Makes sense.

Epic. This is friggin awesome. I love seeing people utilize part cars. Saves a lot of money and if you can get your hands on a donor that's in better shape than your own, your gravy.

Good luck with all the labor bud!
Thanks Brian! I came up with this idea with intent to outsource most of the work. But now that it has come down to it, I have had two local engine guys turn down the amount of work discussed. I believe that in all of my disbelief of why they would turn down an apparent plug-n-play swap, I somehow talked myself into prepping for this work.

Finding some storage for my garage toys that are taking up much needed space:violin: and ordered two gasket kits today. 1 OEM and 1 knockoff.

All moving forward. Went to check the compression and found that I had purchased a fuel pressure tester.... doh'. So now I will have to postpone my compression test till tomorrow when I have a cold engine.

psyche'd,
Got the electronics pulled in casual time today, some hoses pulled aside and some exhaust unblolted. Working on drive shafts before I'm trying to do the tranny-TC (That's transfer case for you torque converter folks) split. Maybe in the evening tomorrow night. Got some help coming: a banquet evening. :lightsaber:

Go Scotty!

I'm honestly pretty surprised when I see that THAT engine that has 201k miles on it comes back with compression numbers like those. I real testament to regular maintenance as well as sheer Toyota build quality.

I was surprised and very excited by these numbers. (Makes me want a SC) My lifted truck feels in good shape, but this one feels smooth in the shifting and snappy on acceleration. Taking these trucks apart has shown me the quality you speak of with every 15 yr old bolt that snaps free and threads coming out like new. amazing,

Awesome, good luck with the swap!

Thank you! appreciate the encouragement,

dis gonna be good...

:pimp: Thanks Kernel, I rented a space for 1 month to store all my garage stuff in. Hopefully I can keep a pace up on this work.

Hmmm.... Thoughts?

toying with the idea of putting new gears in my diffs. Coming from 4:10's. Got 4:30's going in unless... I go 4:56, 4:88's...

It's a DD, but I do tow frequently and for work. If I ever do it, it would be easiest now.

today: pulled both drive shafts, unplugged the "spinal cord" of electrical clips that runs down the transmission, loosened cross member, unbolted the motor mounts, dropped the tranfer case, unbolted the flange on the exhaust that drops out the first catalitic converter and pulled the engine and tranny out of the truck.

Today was mostly a cleanup day from th last couple. I winched the donor carcus out of the garage and tidied up the workspace.

USPS brought me a package from 12voltguy.com 17.5' e-locker lead with 2"*2" plate. Looks pretty sweet. Nice positive, smooth function on the switch and clean connections (what little there are)

So, since my gaskets for the motor that I just pulled are delayed (OEM's) I'm thinking about what else I need to do to this/these engines. My oil leak has gotten bad enough on my lifted truck that I've practically parked it.

Should I:

1. go ahead and pull my lifted truck engine/tranny now and be working on frame rehab/ redoing gaskets on two motors at once?

2. Wait and do one motor at a time,

Oh yeah, what does it take to waterproof an engine?

2.

I've never done this but I'd pull the bad motor and work on that one first. That way if there is a learning curve your good engine is the frankenbeast. Good luck with frame rehab. It's an intensive job. Thanks for sharing what you're doing.

Well... Sounds great, but I just dropped the motor out of the donor. Sounds like it will be a deal where I work on both since I'm waiting on gaskets for donor.

I'm pretty excited about this project, so I thought I would provide some light photo documents. Enjoy!

Built mounts on a skid (courtesy of Shrockworks. One free skid with every bumper purchase,)to free up the hoist and have something to work on.

Don't laugh, this is how we do in Kentucky.:thumb:

Thats awesome man. How was it pulling that pig out of there? Especially with the tranny still attatched.

And would you think it would still work with the transfer case mounted or is it necessary to take it off first

Thanks for the props buddy, Wasn't too bad coming out of there. I had forgotten a couple of hoses going to the heater core on the back of the block and one temperature sensor clip in the same spot, then a transmission clip was on the very top of the tranny and I couldn't get to it when I was under it. I had also thought that unbolting the exhaust would let it seperate, but a section was necessary to remove.
So I pulled about half way, undid the forgotten or unreachable items, then hoisted it on out. I have SERIOUS doubts about clearance under the firewall with the transfer case still attached. Tranny case split was by far the easiest thing to do though. besides the one bolt that you have to get in the 1 oclock position on the case that is only accessible through the floor of the cab, :yuck:

Hopefuly my gasket kit will be in soon so I can get this prep'd and put back into my truck.
