Ode to my truck

Sweet thanks man. Good to hear it came out alright. Do you know if there are any other seals I would need to replace after oulling the case?

The connection between Transfer case and transmission is a metal/metal machined fit with no gasket. There is an inner output shaft seal that you may want to check/replace. This one below looks brand new with 201K on it. Yu will also need to dismantle the interior gearshift. Remember that your shifter goes to the linkage on the driver side and the 2H/4H/4L shifter is straight to your TC. you have to unbolt the 4 screws that hold the base of this shifter. I shifted mine to N and bolted it back on as soon as I dropped it so they did not get out of sync. Not a big deal anyhow,

I see nothing else at this junction that you would replace. Part of what make it so easy. ... and the bolts weren't cranked down to ridiculous torque settings.

Thats awesome man. How was it pulling that pig out of there? Especially with the tranny still attatched.

And would you think it would still work with the transfer case mounted or is it necessary to take it off first

The other thing you should know about attempting to pull it with the t/c attached is that it creates and imbalance that can be very frustrating to the person or persons trying to do this.
Not that I would know:toilet3:

Workin on it. Been finding lots of use for geared box wrenches... ladies; on sale at Lowe's :boink:

OMG yes! I only use the old fashioned ones now when the ratcheting ones don't fit, or I need to hammer on the wrench to break corrosion.

BTW, I would just like to acknowledge the fact that the opening to the above statement really makes me sound like a vapid tween girl texting her BFF about getting fro-yo after cheerleading practice...

Oh, and awesome thread, I'd love to have the space/time to do this kind of work someday

They are quite choice, if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up... wrenches that is. Not vapid tweens... I mean #YOLO :redbrick:

Thanks for the Nelsonmd stamp of approval. I am learning a lot to say the least. :thumb3:

All prepared and ready to pull. Thought I would sleep on it and get it done tomorrow. I suppose I will focus my sights on fixing the oil leak on my 301K motor and push the donor back into the bay.:juggle: My gears are slow to come in the mail. Might be a minute before I get to put my truck back together.

Note* tires are flat as deflating them gives me some much needed clearance. Donor truck was scraping the ceiling with the cherry picker.

Motor pulled. Building a second work stand tomorrow and going through the gaskets. Likely not replacing headgaskets as I don't want to pull the cams. Mostly gonna focus on head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust gaskets and valve seals. The kits I have contain buku small extras that I will replace as I find them.

Two identical trucks... Two different exhausts.... whoda' thought,

Got my second stand built and began working on the motor from my lifted truck to be put back in the donor. Delays in my diffs (ahem, Marlin... are you lisening?) have put emphasis back onto the donor.

1. fix oil leak
2. valve oil seals
3. valve cover gaskets.

Lifted the covers off and found previous owner or myself have caused a crap ton of build up, I'm chipping away to get at the cam journal bolts.

Oil leak looks as though it is likely from the main front seal. I am pulling the timing belt (as I think I have to do to get to my valve seals) to get to the main seal now.

Plenty to be done,:bolt:

Today's been fixing the oil leak on my 301K motor. I pulled the timing belt, oil pan and pump. Razor bladed and wiped down all of the mating surfaces and cleaned the pump intake.

Applied some NAPA RTV to the dimpled surfaces and began reconstruction. Retimed the motor and assembled all back. I hope to finish changing out valve cover seals tonight.

Cleaned up under my valve covers with a, how do you say...

... ah yes, vacuum. My buddy Rex is so kindly demonstrating. We chipped away 1 and 2 inch piles of sludge over the tops of the head bolts...

reconstructed

new valve cover seals, PCV valve, cam plugs and some spark plug grommets.

Finished up the mating of the donor and old motor. Had to cut the exhaust on my truck to take it apart and lost 1 O2 sensor in the process. Probably head to the muffler shop in the morning to hope fix.... you knew it was gonna happen, ...the check engine light that came on. Could be something I did, better start with the gimees like the cut O2 wire.

Also lost 4wd for a moment with a pulled out pigtail from the transer case... It's better now...

But now, starts the build.

Got the exhaust repaired and engine light fixed. OFFICIALLY not throwing codes... If anyone wants to know whar my stock 99 looks like... well, here you go.

Came back and pushed my lifted truck out and pressure washed all the inside. Seemed like with the engine out, was a good time to cleanup the mess.

Put it up on blocks and am ready to pull axles in preperation for the new diffs.

Tonight I didnt feel like doing anything. My buddy came by and asked how he could help. Thank goodness he did becuase what started out in a couple hours of frustration by stuck nuts that were impossible to reach (24 mm shock bolt on Billy 5100's- you guys know) and completely caked in mud, ended up with both axles dropped.

Looking under the truck is astonishingly empty...

At this point i am ready for reconstruction. What lies ahead of me is picking up my new 4.88's from the shop, cutting the rear axle housing for the e-locker retro fit, a couple quick seals added to the motor, and what has now become full reconstruction of my truck. ... you know... just that.....:jump:

not much done today. The shop where my diffs are at is only open wed-fri. I'm running down tomorrow to see what is going on. Though, If i were gambling, (which I may be) I would bet that nothing has been done. No problem though as donor truck is driving well.

Little things tonight:
Installed a new CB as the old one had some recieveing issues...
Swept and picked up tools...
Greasing my terminals with dielecectric grease.

A look at marlin chromoly axles with 4000 miles on them :naughty:
