Odometer not reading accurately

Just know when you read this, 98blacksr5, that some 4Runners came stock with 225/75/15 and some came with 265/70/16.

In our case, if we were to put 33's on our trucks, we would have a much larger difference than rdgt4r, since he had larger tires from the factory.

Technically, yes, your speedo will be worse if you go up in tire size. It's all in the diameter of the tire, doesn't matter the rim size. A popular change for most people with 4Runners are 265/75/16s or 265/70/17s. They're practically 32" inch tires and are the largest tire that will fit without lift. A change from your stock size to a tire like that would give you a pretty big difference in speedo readings. When I'm going 58 on my speedometer, I know I'm actually going 65, and there are ways to correct the speedometer afterwards.

Also, you could upgrade to the stock size for the Limited and some SR5 4Runners, 265/70/16, which would be about a 30.7 inch tire.

Just make sure that the first tire is 225/75/15 and then plug in your desired size.

Yes i know that but my information is all relative. Stock he was at 225/75
and went to a 235/75 which is about .5-.6" difference in overall diameter that is on an unloaded tire not on the vehicle. That small of a percentage wont show that drastic of a change in ODO readings.

You're right, I just read his post, something else is definitely wrong or he really did drive that far.

Really, he should only experience a minimal, most likely undetectable, change. That being said, it was probably just a miscalculation on how far he went. From the post he made, if he drove 100 miles but it showed 300 miles on his ODO, then somethings really wrong. Nothing should net a 300% difference... thats insane.

98blacksr5, why not test out how off you really are again? next time you go on a drive, reset your trip meter. Try driving with a friend in a second car so you two can compare distances afterwards...

Well I was off on the 100 miles back home, I did mapquest from Rancho cordova, ca. to my hometown in Salida, ca. which was 66 miles so when i left rancho cordova the millage was 120,84 and when i got home i reset the trip so now i have 76 miles on the trip and 120,04 on the odometer. So 120,84 + 66 = 121,50 + the trip 76 = a total of 122,26 miles it should have on the 4runner but it reads 120,04, something is definitely wrong. I'll re test it like you said and see what i get, I hope this is not confusing to you guy's. thank you.

Well I was off on the 100 miles back home, I did mapquest from Rancho cordova, ca. to my hometown in Salida, ca. which was 66 miles so when i left rancho cordova the millage was 120,84 and when i got home i reset the trip so now i have 76 miles on the trip and 120,04 on the odometer. So 120,84 + 66 = 121,50 + the trip 76 = a total of 122,26 miles it should have on the 4runner but it reads 120,04, something is definitely wrong. I'll re test it like you said and see what i get, I hope this is not confusing to you guy's. thank you.

The only thing that's confusing me is where you're putting the comma in your mileage?? Not sure if you have 12K or 120K. Is it supposed to be 120,084... 121,050... 122,026... and 120,040?

I think he is reading his ODO wrong or something... a 98 SR5 would have 120k if it had low miles, you know? 12k wouldnt make sense... so if 120,84 + 66 = 121,50 was his math... I thought he was leaving out the odd end of it to round it off like.. 120,84x... you know?

I think he got confused when adding the 66. In reality he should've added 120,840+66 and gotten 120,906.

That or now I'm just confused.

You are right I was leaving the last number out, so I have 121,047 miles, sorry for the confusion guys. I will do another test this week like childrenofbotom said because that last number still turns real slow.
