Odometer Not Working?

Someone I know needed to replace their odometer in their 99. I had a donor odometer that worked perfectly so I sent it to him. Now it's not working and the odometer is not showing anything readable. Any ideas on what might have went wrong? I asked him to check the connection and use a little dielectric grease to ensure a strong contact and to apply light pressure to the odometer screen when on and see if it shows up, meaning a loose solder connection.

All else fails I'm going to file a shipping claim, since I know it worked fine when I took it out and shipped it.

What was the old odometer doing?

Side note: I can't really imagine the shipper doing anything for you in this situation.

It might be fine. Maybe his truck is the problem?

His old odometer worked, it had other issues. It's just so odd that I pulled it out with a working odometer, shipped it, then he put it in and it doesn't work anymore.

What other issues was he initially having? If he was having a short in that circuit he could have fried the new gauge cluster. Have seen it happen in an Acura beforehand.
