Hi..this is my first post here.
I drive a 2001 4runner sr5(I bought it new) that I take on beach for fishing in delaware. I have just purchased new tires(500mi) and had my service in which all fluids and the like were changed. On a recent beach trip I pulled off side of road to drop air in tires down to 20lb....got back into truck and pushed in 4wd button. everything locked in at once. Previous trips I had to put in 4wd then lock in differentional seperatly. I must say that I was not sitting perfectly flat on side of road, kind of listing to one side. I drove onto beach and all seemed to be ok. I did hear what sounded like a slight squeak as the tires rotated.....figured it must be the new tires on the soft sand. Coming off the beach after fishing for 3 hours there still was the slight squeak. I sped up to leave. As i did I caught an odor that smelled like something burning(rubber,oil? I dont know). The smell lasted for maybe 15-20 seconds. When i got on the harder sand access road everything seemed ok. drove on that road and a gravel road a bit....nothing.
Drove home(in 2wd of course) ...nothing. Again, eveything seemed to be ok. I havent been off road since. I have never had a problem like this before. This sounds wierd...but does anyone think new tires can heat up enough in sand to put off an odor? Any thoughts?
I did check oil and transmission fluids. All were fine and nothing smelled burnt.
