OEM 2020+ headunit with Apple Carplay/Android Auto into 2014-2019

Just making a quick post about adding a 2020+ headunit with Android Auto/Apple Carplay into a 2014-2019, specifically into my 2015 SR5 PREM with navigation, non-JBL. All you need is a headunit and a transplant harness. I know I could've gone aftermarket headunit but I like installing OEM as much as possible. The headunit I picked up was used so a lot cheaper than buying brand new from the dealer. Keep in mind you need a specific head unit depending on your model and what you are looking to purchase. In my case it needed to have navigation and be non-JBL. JBL models will have a slightly different install I believe. Auto Harness House can help if you have any questions.

Here is the headunit straight out of the box. In great shape except for a couple minor scratches.

Best price I've come across lately is about $800 . Currently using the sony 8100 and love it but really want an oem look. Yes I spent around that much. If you shop around you could probably find a better price. I didn't shop around as I understand these are not easy to come by so I snatched up the first one that suited my requirements.

I could be wrong but I believe you would use the OEM connector from existing harness for your hazards. From what I can tell it is the exact same as older models. Will update once I get the harness to install.

I was also looking at the Sony 8100 as it has the advantage of an HDMI port. The only thing I didn't like is you lose all OEM functions (but gain Carplay and AA). With the OEM headunit you keep OEM functions and have the added bonus of Carplay and AA which you can switch back and forth whenever you want. I believe both Sony and OEM headunit is WIRED Carplay/AA so no advantage on either side. I plan to use the wireless adapter but have not decided on which one yet as there are quite a few options out there. Trying to figure out a way to have both audios from USB and plugged in Android Auto/Wireless adapter dongle at the same time...

Just finished installing the headunit and everything works! The only thing I noticed is the hazard button works but does not stay on. Does anyone know anything about that?

Take your old hazard button and install it. I have a 2021 and a 2017. 2017 feels like an on/off vs the 2021 temporary contact switch feel

The one that worked for me is 86100-35640. Mine is a 2015 SR5 PREM with navigation, non-JBL.

just bought one off ebay for a decent price. It doesnt have the vents though, will I be able to reuse my current vents? As for the hazard button I can reuse that just need to trim it

Yes it looks like the vents are exactly the same.

Yes I used the hazard button and it's surrounding trim bezel from old unit.

Is there a way to customize the startup and or screen OFF image on these newer headunits? Was able to do this on my 2015 but can't seem to find any info when searching. Only results show for 2019 or older. Thanks!

It's been talked about in the main thread about the headunit swap and no it's only for the old style headunit that you can change the start up pictures.

the 2022 HU arrived, minor blemishes as expected but overall good condition. Orders placed for the necessary wiring to complete the install. Will hopefully be completed by next week sometime.

Installed 2022 OEM head unit in my 2016 Trail Edition Premium, works!

I had originally installed the OEM Audio+ full kit with amp and sub into my 2016 4Runner Trail Edition Premium (TEP) with my stock head unit, non-JBL. The sound and volume level was much improved over stock.

I then installed the $600 Car Trim Home (CTH) T10 V2 head unit with Android Auto, wireless Carplay, navigation and 128 GB of storage. I absolutely loved this unit for its fast and large 9" screen, apps like Gaia and custom vehicle telemetry data and graphs with OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth scanner with OBDLink app but the sound quality of this unit was muddled and tinny, even after playing with the EQ and getting to the best possible position. The problem was the audio hardware on the unit. It was so poor, I couldn't listen to any audio at all but I still loved the unit for all the other features. However, the unit died and black-screened after just 3 months of use. I just can't deal with cheap stuff that doesn't work well.

Wanting great audio more than built in Gaia and OBD2 data, I purchased an OEM Entune 3.0 4Runner head unit from a 2022 T4R with the retrofit adapter kit from Entune 3.0 Install kit for Toyota vehicles - Add Carplay for $2450. It's installed and works very well. Still, I wish it had the ability to install Gaia trail maps and use the OBDLink MX+ OBD2 Bluetooth scanner with OBDLink app. Back to duplication with the iPad and xGPS unit to get trail maps. I guess we can't have it all.

Gaia works with CarPlay so you can still use it. Mostly though I have an 11” iPad on a mount that’s used for mapping off road, again with Gaia. If you go the ipad route, make sure you get one of the cellular models as they’re the only ones that have a gps chip built in.

Oh interesting. Can you use the cellular model iPad without the cell plan and use the GPS for free or do you need to buy a plan?
