OEM battery

My 2016 SR5 is 6 years old and the original battery runs OK. But I'm planning to replace it in a few months when going for a long trip in the summer. Just checked local dealer's website, all of them showed not available. Where do you buy yours from? Advance Auto has AGM for $209 and other cheaper ones from $159-$265. The current battery is Panasonic and it does not look like AGM battery.

Wow, sounds like a good heavy duty battery. Why are they so expensive now? I remember a few years ago a little over $100 can buy a decent one.
 
That Panasonic probably has 2-4 more years of life left in it. I wouldn't replace it yet. Otherwise, every Interstate battery I've had has made it 5+ years.

Depends on what you were looking at before. That one is definitely on the more expensive side even for an AGM, its definitely better than most. Inflation and availability I am sure doesn't help.

Panasonic lasts 8-10 years? His battery is already 6 years old. lol

I generally try to replace my battery's before i get stuck and have to jump them. Usually 4-6 years tops.

A friend of mine with decades in the auto parts business says that the batteries NAPA sells are the best on the market. He works for a competitor and buys NAPA batteries for his vehicles.
 
OEM and replacement

Believe it or not I think the panasonic you have currently is the OEM.
Mine is OEM and it's a panasonic.

If you're camping (especially off-grid) I would highly recommend buy-once-cry-once on a replacement battery.. from what my research has shown me Odyssey and Northstar are all favs for 4runners being run off-grid.

Also.. good article here as a starting point for understanding what/where to look for a replacement.

I'm not saying he is wrong, but in my experience the last 10 years as a tech, I'm not impressed with Napa batteries.

Interesting. Never had someone suggest NAPA batteries as "best". But they are manufactured by East Penn in the US which make Deka and Duralast and some other big brands.

Just throwing this out there, my 2010 4R (daily driver) was 9.5 years old with 130,000 miles on it when I traded it in on my 2019 4R.

It was the original battery when I traded it in. :shrug:

I never had an OEM battery last that long before in any vehicle.
 
The OEM Panasonic batteries are very good- we got 8 or so years out of one in our 2011 FJCruiser. I'd have replaced it with another but I could not find one anywhere- I don't think Panasonic sells them in the US.
 
Just replaced mine with a Costco Interstate Group 27f. Has to remove the old tray. Trying to decide if I need a tray under the new one. $93.99 w/o tray.

^ This. I also run Odyssey Performance. I got it from...maybe napa? It was 20% off.

As for the OEM battery...it all depends on the climate!

Here in AZ, it lasted 3 summers, just as any other normal battery. My first AGM also lasted 3 summers. It was a Penn made Duracell branded AGM on a Subaru. It is the number of summers that matter here...buying in October helps, LOL.

When it is over 100F in your garage for 4 months per year or more, this is what happens.

Good point. And also depends on your accessories. I run a 600 watt amp lights and quite often need battery power when the vehicle is not running.
 
I'm skeptical about the AGM batteries. I know many people love them but I've read too many posts about them dying out early, way too early. they charge differently than a standard lead acid battery and can be finicky if the right voltage isn't given to them. Many people use a trickle charger with them. Newer cars can be programmed or detect AGM batteries and charge them accordingly, but I don't know about our 4runners, especially older years

I've had great success with OEM and have only ever put OEM in my 4runner and wife's lexus, minimum 650CCA. each one has lasted at least 5 years through canadian winters (wifes 2010 RX with 170k km is on it's second and my 2012 4runner is on it's third with 250k km, actually just replaced it last week)

if you don't have any significant power requirements beyond factory I don't see the need to change batteries. 5 years for a battery is respectable. of course, I know not everyone shares the same OEM battery love that I do

project farm is awesome! So detailed and scientific. Anything he tests out as best is a sure winner.

I got my Gooloo 4000a jump pack because it tested so well on project farm.

have you had to use it yet? I had a GB40 and I knew my battery was on its way out, so I let it die during an extreme cold over the course of 4 days. tried to start it at -32*C and the GB40 wouldn't even get a crank out of the engine. nothing at all. I was for once finally excited to have a dead battery since I knew I was going to replace it anyway when I had the chance. went to project farm after this to research and GB40 tested second worst on their list. go figure, so I returned it

The issue I think with some of these weaker portables is in extreme colds, when most people's batteries die and have no juice left. there's just not enough juice to get it going again from the portable chargers. autowit supercap2 is supposed to be good too. it doesn't work on lithium and uses capacitors which don't drain over time. called CAA, they were swamped and they didn't even show up. so I now have gauge 2 jumpers all the time with me
