OEM Factory Toyota hood bug deflector

Anyone have pics of their 3rd gen 4runner with the oem factory toyota hood bug deflector? My dealership is offering 20% off accesories and Im interested in a hood deflector, however i cant find any pictures of it for the life of me.

Any reviews or feedback of the oem one would be awesome. I was considering the avs one but with 20% off oem might be the way to go?

came on the 4runner when i bought it. says toyota on driver side of bugshield. i have thought about taking it off but it gives that much more of a look... you know. only picture i have at the moment

thanks for the quick reply! that looks sweet! can you comment on how it mounts to the hood? any rubber weatherstripping or bolts?

i know the avs ones are 3m taped. The guy at the dealership says the oem comes with mounting brackets.

from what i remember seeing when under the hood, there is a bracket (or maybe predrilled holes on hood) with those hard plastic type screws that attach the shield to hood. only underneath the hood though. i could take a picture of it later.

awesome, so there are mounting brackets. Pics would be great but i think you've given me enough information to justify the oem purchase over the avs!! haha!

The AVS one isn't taped on and IMO is better than OEM since it alolows enough room to clean behind it and doesn't require bumpstops.

My mom had the OEM one and it sat way to close to the hood and was impossible to clean behind it w/o removing it and sits right on the bumpstops and if one does come off it'll rub the hood raw.

Here's my 2nd AVS as the first one got broken from a big rock recently.

To stay on topic, I have the AVS II shield and it works well. The original Toyota one was somewhat poorly designed

i think there all to big i like my lund avenger it was like $36 dollars and its enough to make the front end look better

I have the OEM one and really enjoy it. Much nicer apperence.

With mine I do not have any bump stops and can clean behind it.

Mine attatches with four screws. The holes should be predrilled in your hood.

Yeah,I had my radio on when I was off road and it took a whack from a branch and quit working so it just stays like that and yes,those are Icons and so far I'm quite impressed with them.


The AVS is a bit bigger than some but it conforms nicely to the shape of the hood and extends past the edges which I like and being a bit taller it keeps some of those rocks from the scoop.

Sorry to be off topic, but are those Tundra rims? They look nice! How is the backspacing compared to the stock rims? Do your wheels stick sunken in more than stock?

As for the original poster, I have the Toyota bug shield, but no bump stops. It doesn't rub and I have plenty of room to clean behind it. I have a 1997 Limited, so maybe the design of the deflector has changed.

hmm i probably mistaken the 3m tape with the window visors.

Anyone have problems with the oem one like Ron stated with it being too close and maybe rubbing the paint off?



Reason i want a hood deflector so bad is becuase my hood is like rock chip sand blasted to hell. My beautiful stellar blue pearl front end is all freckled. I touch up paint it, light sand, cut, buff, seal, polish, carnuba go up the mountains come back and its all screwed again. why does toyota paint chip so easily!?

Is it because our vehicles are higher off the ground and we see more rocks?

will any bug deflector help with rock chips? should i get a bra? lol

should i stop caring because this is a "utility" vehicle and it happens because of the nature that the truck is in?

my 12 year old bmw has like 2 rock chips! and i drive on the freeway with that thing all the time!?

Yes,those are AVS visors.

My mom had a different OEM one that was very close to the hood and rested on the bumpstops and when one fell off it rubbed the paint down to the metal. The AVS one has bumpstops but it doesn't even come close to the touching the hood (even at high speeds) so I don't even have the bumpstops installed.

I personally don't like the window visors that attach with tape as much as the ones that are in channel.

Another common issue with the OEM deflector is that it causes vibration of the hood when in high speed. I took mine off a while ago.

I have the OEM deflector with bumpstops. It sucks ass. I can't clean behind it, and one of the bumpstops went missing.

I haven't considered taking it off though. Never gave much thought bout it. Hmmm....

The AVS one never touches the hood even at speeds over 100mph. I've never had bumpstops on mine in 4 years and my deflector has never contacted the hood.

Here's a pic of me forcing the defelector back and I am applying hard pressure to get it to touch the hood.

And as you can see I have no marks from the deflector period.

I think they changed them up for the '99 model year update. My dad's old 1996 Tacoma had the same type of deflector you have, where it just attaches with tape to the underside of the hood. My 2002 came with one from the factory, but it sat close enough to the hood to need the little bump stops. My AVS doe not need the bump stops installed, but I haven't been able to get them off so I just leave them there.

This is an old picture, but I love my AVS bug shield. I like how it matches the lines of the headlights with a little lip that curls up
