OEM LED tail light Install w/ pics

Long story short, after reading that the 06-09 4runner tail lights will fit on my 2003 without modification, I went on Ebay to buy a set of 06-09 tail lights.

I've made sure all the bulbs were in tight making good contact, all the plugs were securely snug, I've also read that plugging both sides in would make it work, but it didn't.

The blinkers don't blink, and the reverse do not come on, but the LED brake lights work.

I've also confirmed that my Bulbs work fine.

Any other things I can try??

i would suggest taking it out the truck and make sure all the bulb holder are seating correctly in the socket.

I saw your other thread. Did you ever get them to work? I've seen other threads where folks had trouble, turns out they were aftermarket (not that has anything to do with it, but just saying..... most did get them to work).

I had that same issue just yesterday doing the install. I figured the problem and it was human error on my part. After pluging in the wiring harness for the LED to the gray socket I tested to make sure everything thing worked but the reverse and turn signal did not. I went back and noticed that you have to screw the gray socket back into the hole. By doing this there are wire leads that power the turn signal and reverse from the brake light.

I always wear gloves when handling bulbs. Just a tip for anybody dealing with headlights, HID, LED, and anything else related to lights.

But, yeah I too had to same issue of the LED tail lights not properly working only due to that the bulbs were not completely seated in the sockets. You really have to push them in.

I have a 2005 and it's must have upgrade. I still have my old set of tail lights if anybody wants them for cheap. Near excellent condition OEM tails.

Part number you listed are incomplete, it usually followed by 5 digit number. Anyway, the LED tail lights are compatible with all 4th gen years. Anyway, just use the part numbers I listed and you are set!

Bringing this thread back from the dead...one answer I have not found anywhere is regarding the bulbs. The 06-09 tail lights are "LED" so do I need to upgrade the bulbs to LED bulbs, or do my 05 stock incandescent bulbs work in these? Doesn't seem to make sense but just trying to price out this upgrade and wondering if I need to buy all new bulbs in addition to the assemblies.

No you do not need to purchase any bulbs. The LEDs are built into the '06-09 taillights (non-replaceable). You will reuse the turn signal and reverse bulbs. Just make sure you push and twist the socket where your brake light bulb had been located in your original taillights.

Awesome! I found a set for $120, just debating if it's worth putting in my 12 yr old 4Runner.

Well, with that mentality, I'm should be stopping modding my Civic which has 225,000 miles and 10 years old..................... yeah, that's not going to happen. Both my 4R and Civic look and drive like new. If your rig is 12 years old and in good shape, go for it! Is is financially worth it? Of course not, but it may put a smile to your face. That has no price. :becky:

Hi,

I have a 2007 4runner Sport V8 with the OEM tail lights and one of the LEDs is burned. Would anyone know how to replace it. I opened the panel to the rear of the light cluster and there is only one plug going in for the LEDs.

Don't know what to tell you. Unless you are an expert, try to fix it. I wouldn't know where to start. I would start by ordering a new OEM tail light , pretty sure most of us would.

Glad I found this post! I'm about to pick up a 2005 4runner tonight! Has minor damage nothing to crazy but the taillight is slightly cracked..

you cant make your own replacements by getting some weatherstripping tape?

its not exactly a super critical part, its just needs to seal a little to keep the dirt out

I got my 06 taillights and I went to install them this morning. I got both nuts off of the stock one and I could not get it to come off. Is there something Im missing? It was about 17 F out this morning could it be the cold? Im going to try it again this afternoon when it is warmer out.
