OEM NAV Calibration Problems

Yesterday I was driving home from work. It was a typical gray & overcast afternoon in Atlanta. Nothing that would cause a problem with your satellite TV, so I figure that there would be no problem with the GPS satellites.

As I started to leave my office, the location arrow on my OEM NAV system began to jump around. It knew my general area, but it had me on a street that was almost a quarter mile away. When I got to the first place I was going, I attempted to manually re-calibrate the GPS by moving my location to exactly where I was. Once I was on my way again, all was well for about a mile before the GPS wigged out & went way off course again all the way until I got home.

When I got in the truck this morning, the last known (incorrect) location was there, but when I started moving, the GPS properly picked up where I was all the way to the office.

This is the second time that my GPS has done this. Both times it has happened in Atlanta and it has happened around dusk when it was overcast. I have driven through driving rains in the truck & the GPS never crapped out on me. So I don;t think the fact that it was overcast both times had anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this issue with the OEM GPS? Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is this possibly a problem with my NAV unit?

Had similar thing happen to me on a roadtrip two weeks ago. The NAV stopped showing me on the interstate and it ended up showing me going through nowhere. When I looked at the screen several times the "GPS" in the upper left corner was not there. This was on a clear night. On the return trip it worked fine through the same area. But then it crapped out again in a different area with "GPS" missing. This was the first time this has happened, but also the first time I been through these areas with the truck or driving on highway for at least 3 hours. I am wondering if there is a way to force the system to "look for" the GPS signals to re-establish current location.
 
Have you gone to the dealer with this yet? I am very concerned about this. These nav systems are very expensive, I expect it to work properly.
 
I called 3 Toyota dealers, and they all told me that they had no operating complaints with the nav system. They were no help. They also said no TSB was issued for the 4 Runner nav system.
 
The Sienna and 4Runner have the same nav system; Toyota only makes one system! But it does come in different versions, or "generations", over time. You can't ever upgrade your system's generation to a later one without spending big money to replace the hardware. Update discs just update the map and POI data.

Here's the new TSB, EL012-06, which includes 2006-2007 4Runners with "Generation 5" navigation systems. Solution is as easy as replacing the DVD disc.

This TSB is confusing. On page 2 at the bottom of the page they show the disc with a part# 5-464210-092, is this the update disc that should be in the nav system to comply with the TSB? I want to understand this because 3 dealers had no clue what I was talking about.
Also on page 2 they list VIN#, but what is the model code?
 
The way I read it, Toyota's part number didn't change, but Denso's did. That's why the dealer and you need to care about the long Denso part number. You can't just go by the Toyota number - you need to read the fine print, too.

The dealer just needs to follow the steps on page 3. I'd definitely walk in there with a copy of the TSB in hand.

Know that there are two different types of discs - a "program disc" and an "update disc". The program disc is the one that comes with the truck from the factory, and an update disc is purchased by you at a later date to update the map and POI data. This appears to be a replacement for the program disc. Page 1 says that if you have already purchased the update disc that was released this month, then you also have the correction and the TSB is not applicable.

The TSB applies to all models. The reason that there are so many VIN patterns listed is because of 2WD vs 4WD (4th digit, Z or B), V6 vs V8 (5th digit, U or T), and Manufacturing Plant (11th digit, 0 or 8).

The VIN's listed are 2007 VIN's (10th digit = 7), so if you have a 2006 the VIN doesn't even matter - you're included in the TSB. If you have a 2007, you need to check the serial number (last 6 digits) of your truck against the correct line in the table (based on the other variables I mentioned above). If your serial number is lower than those listed, the TSB also applies to you.

The VIN's listed indicate when the change was made on the assembly line. So if your serial number is higher than those listed, or the truck is made after the date of the TSB (11/14/06), then you have nothing to worry about - things will be correct from the factory.

toto...you da BOMB! I will be heading over to the Toyota dealership this week to procure my new DVD.

In addition to fixing the "where the hell am I?" problem, maybe this disc will actually have a lot of the streets that are missing on my daily route due to new construction!
 
WARNING!

I just got home from the dealer after having the new Gen 5 disk installed, as we were having the same problem with losing the GPS location.

WARNING: The update appears to solve the problem, but this new software version ELIMINATES the awesome override function (Menu > Volume > TopLeft > BottomLeft > TopLeft > BottomLeft).

I'm about to start searching around to see if there is a new secret key combo. Can't live without that override function.... :(
 
Toto - thanks for the great info on the Nav system TSB. Unfortunatly, I am having a tough time obtaining the update disk. The dealers which I have spoken to say that I need to duplicate the problem, or pay $$ for the update disk. It's difficult to duplicate the gps issus, as it shows me in the wrong location only once in awhile.
My rig is a 2006 with 11,000 miles, and should be covered under warranty.
Any suggestions for obtaining the fix? I even gave the dealers the TSB # (EL012-06), and they said they cannot find it in their system, thus this TSB is invalid for my situation.

With this talk of the nav system showing the wrong location, I had this problem several times and just thought nothing of it. I figured it was just poor signal from the satellites or some inteference in the area I was travelling. I also notice now that the "GPS" indicator in the upper left hand corner under the map scale is missing. The system seems to be working OK but when I check the GPS information screen (diagnostics) I show that I'm only receiving 3 or 4 satellites and the "Status" shows either "NG" or it stays blank. I guess it's off to the dealer with this one! So even though it appears to be working, obviously it's not working properly. I have an 06 with the Data ver 05.1 disc. I'm just wondering what disc I have in my 07 Lexus ES350...I wonder if they are interchangeable? I'm affraid to try it because when I had my 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee, when I upgraded to a new disc, it changed the operation of the nav and made the old disc useless. Thanks for the heads up on this TSB!

You're correct. Once the nav is updated, it cannot be reverted back to the old disc. There's a way to tell if it's an OEM disc (one installed at the factory) vs. an upgrade disc by the location of the nine dots. I've read that upgrade disc contains a firmware flash when the disc is loaded in the first time and once the firmware is flashed it renders the OEM disc useless.
 
I haven't noticed the problem with my '06 nav E7008 with GPS issues yet. But my '04 Camry E7003 has been upgraded once through Toyota, a service campaign letter was sent to me stating customers have complained about anomolies, thus Toyota standing by their product is offering the one time free courtesy upgrade. I noticed once the upgrade isn't very accurate and the nav seems confused at times to my actual location. I'm on the freeway (four lane per direction) and changing lanes from the left to right, the nav thinks I went from freeway to a road adjacent to it. Kind of embarassing that a $2k option is flakey. I've seen it happen more than once on my uncle's Odyssey, once it said we were in the water. :bash:
 
What's the latest database version that has been released? I believe someone said version 6.1 is the newest that was released in September (from the Sienna boards). Also, what generation nav do I have in my 06 Ltd? The model is E7008. How can you tell what gen it is? Also from the Sienna boards someone said the new disc from the TSB only has new software/firmware...it is not the latest map database. Anyone with the new disc from TSB confirm this?
 
Override feature?

Forgive my ingorance, but what does the override function do which briandunning spoke of? (Menu > Volume > TopLeft > BottomLeft > TopLeft > BottomLeft). I've got the nav system in my '06 4Runner.
