OEM oil filter efficiency

I recently had someone tell me that the D1 filter, and all Toyota filters in general are only 50% efficient.

I’ve been running the D1 filter for 10 plus years and never had an issue.

Lately I’ve been running the D1 filter and Supertech 10k 5w30 and doing oil and filter every 4 months according to the service manual. I do this because I have a short commute to work and I’m only doing 6-7k a year.

So, has anyone ever heard, or knows the efficiency of the Toyota filters?

Thanks

I've ran D3 filters for years with good results. Prior to that, I ran the D1's also with good results. I can't find any efficiency data to reflect the performance of D1/D3's, but this is the best I can find. I'm currently running the D3 as we speak, however, at my next oil change I may try out the Fram XG3600. I've read many great things about it, surprisingly enough. Most of my oil info that I read is over on BITOG. Not to say that it can all be taken for gold, but it gives me the tinglies so I'm interested in the Fram filter. I've never, not once, ran a Fram product before, so this will be a big deal to me. If you find any flow rate or efficiency data for the Toyota filters, definitely let me know, as I would love to read up on it.

I put in 6 qts with a D1, how much extra do I need with a D3, half a quart?

Purolator across autos

I use the Puro 20195 (BOSS) on my Runner, Prius (gen 2) and Camry (2.4), makes it So Easy to shop....and I love a Big Filter.

It's been a few years since I last ran the D1 filter. As far as I can remember, I've always put 6 quarts in, both with the D1 and D3. No noticeable difference that I have been able to observe.

I've even ran the Wix 51516 and Napa Gold 1516, which is slightly taller than the D3 and still only put in 6 quarts. Came out perfect every time. Your results may vary though.

Watch out for the Fram oil filters. I personally seen those fail on vehicles and cut off oil pressure my buddy's garage.

I’m thinking about trying the Amsoil filter and pushing out my drain intervals on the Supertech

I'm also running SuperTech, specifically the full synthetic high mileage 5W-30 offering. So far I have had phenomenal results with it. I've put a little over 1K on it since switching over to it and the color is still near new. It also quieted down my engine, which was a big surprise to me. Coming up on 316K and I am loving it. Plus that stuff is the most affordable, that I've seen, full synthetic locally available. If you're an oil nerd like I am, BITOG has amazing information about SuperTech. I was skeptical at first but ultimately was convinced to switch to it. Glad I did and wished I had done so sooner.

I used to run AMSOIL for a long time but never used their filters, always D1's/D3's. I don't foresee issues with extended OCI's, but if you haven't done so already, I would recommend taking a sample at your next oil change and sending it off to Blackstone for analysis. They can give you clearer info on how much more you can stretch out your oil changes. They've told me I could go 6,500 mi if I wanted, but I just stick with 5K or less.

The great news is our engines are very easy on oil. They don't build up sludge and the pistons and cylinder walls age very well over time. I've normally used WIX filters but have ran other brands in the past as well as I buy AMSOIL because of the abuse my engine sees. I think the key here is to avoid bargain brands and stick with ones that are designed to last. I've also been a fan of extended life filters especially if you run synthetic oil.

50% efficient in what regard, at removing particulate? In my eye if that was true, these engines wouldn't last NEARLY as long - and it's very silly to think Toyota would've designed and implemented a barely functional filter literally dozens of times for countless different vehicles, and even more silly to say not one of their engineers noticed during any of their testing on any of their vehicles. Not only that but no consumer noticed for 20-ish years? Not anyone across a thousand different automotive forums? That doesn't really add up
If Toyotas over the past couple decades have been running on oil laden with steel shavings then it would either be extremely unlikely for them to amount the reputation for reliability and longevity that they've acquired; or this reputation would be very well-earned for things to be pretty unphased by it. Or similarly, if the concern is there's poor efficiency below a certain number of microns, I can't help but feel this would show the size of particulate in question is not nearly as crucial or detrimental as it's made out to be
Not saying they're the absolute best filters out there or can't be improved, just that 50% seems like an absurd number

BITOG has traditionally advocated for Fram, even the shitty Orange fellas that have faulty bypass valves, cardboard + rusty steel elements on the inside and provide very little filtration... things they're very quick to judge other filters for when they're not up to par. I would take everything you read on BITOG with a grain of salt and then some; they're made up of some real smart guys that are really passionate about oil and filtration, but also horrendously inconsistent in what the deem acceptable and unacceptable.

I asked the person to publish the source and …. Nothing! I call BS myself.

I will be doing a sample next month.

Have to sometimes desern information. Always be skeptical along with multiple sources. Like when I screw up on the forum here Badluck and other members correct my mistakes. As it's better to have accurate information on the forum then wrong.

I didn't want to believe my buddy when he told me something happened to the fram oil filters. Then I heard and engine really knocking bad and sounding rough. He changed the filter which was a Fram and the issue went away. Ever sense then. I will not use their oil filters.

I have been using Napa gold pro selects and been thinking of going to Toyota oem oil filters myself when my inventory is used up.

I been using Castrol full synthetic oils for years.

Nothing wrong other oils. That was just my goto.

Super tech products are proving to be very good as well by the results I have seen.

It's important to stick with change intervals with oil and filter changes.

On my bad seals engines, until I get them re sealed. I personally use 2 tricks. Granted fixing the leaks is always best but sometimes time and expense of the project prohibits this for happening for a while.

Trick 1 Jump to 10w -30 instead of 5w-30

Trick 2 add Locus heavy duty oil stabilizer to your oil to slightly thicken the oil.

Locus mixes with the oil and slightly thickens it. This will keep oil pressure up and help keep oil in warn seals.
Until you can change the seals.

Once the leaking seals are replaced you can go back to 5w-30 full synthetic oil.

Saying a filter is 50% efficient doesn't mean anything unless you define 50% efficient at filtering what size particle. 10 micron? 20 micron? 30 micron? etc.

A lot of 'expert advice' you read online, especially on forums, is really just opinion. Except for t4R.org. That's why I have 6000+ posts here and nowhere else. People on here really do know their stuff and I've learned a ton. Whenever I venture on another website (or dare I say it, FACEBOOK GROUPS) I take everything I read as opinion, not facts.

You can't go wrong with OEM Toyota filters. Someone a long time ago tore apart a bunch of different manufacturer filters to compare the filter material in them. The OEM filter appeared to be one of the best in regards to the amount of filter media it had.

Plenty of opinions on here too, but generally not much baloney -- I agree with you. And certainly a community of fairly technical, open-minded folks who are actually sharing and learning.

My own concise *opinion*: The OEM filters are fine. Run a used oil analysis for $30 and see if you have any elevated silicon. If you don't then your air and oil filter are doing what they need to be doing.

Article was in Toyota 4WD Magazine. I have a copy of it, unfortunately they didn't have filtration capability specs so it's all about construction. I agree, I think the Toyota filter is probably as good as the best, or close to it.

And if the filter is 50% efficient PER PASS, then you are all good. The oil goes through that filter many many times...

Sure, if somebody wants to run a bypass oil filtration system (large diesel engine style) that catches everything, go ahead... Not needed on a 5VZ though.

I now buy big packs of the D3 filter and run it on my 5vz and 3s-gte...
